Summary

  • Retry CSR completion up to twice on transient failure; delete the incomplete record when retries are exhausted so it does not linger on clusters whose CSR cleaner does not collect that state.
  • Track recording tasks via JoinHandle so the shutdown drain can wait for outstanding writes before the process exits.
  • Grant delete on certificatesigningrequests in the RBAC ClusterRole.

Closes #365

Test plan

  • completion_is_retried_on_transient_failure -- first completion returns 500, retry succeeds
  • an_incomplete_record_is_deleted_when_completion_fails -- all completions fail, record is deleted
  • drain_waits_for_outstanding_tasks -- drain blocks until spawned task finishes
  • Clippy, rustfmt (nightly), rustdoc, cargo-machete all clean

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Certificate enrollment records are more resilient to temporary completion failures, with automatic retries.
    • If recording still cannot be completed, the associated approved certificate request is cleaned up when possible.
    • Service permissions and safeguards now support cleanup of failed requests, including checks on deletion.
    • Outstanding recording tasks are allowed to finish when the service shuts down.

Completion of the CertificateSigningRequest record is retried up to
twice on transient failure. When retries are exhausted the incomplete
record is deleted so it does not linger on clusters whose CSR cleaner
does not collect that state.

Recording tasks are tracked via JoinHandle so the shutdown drain can
wait for outstanding writes before the process exits.

Closes praxis-proxy#365

Walkthrough

CSR recording now retries failed completion, deletes approved CSRs that remain incomplete, and tracks recording tasks for shutdown draining. The CSR filing role and confinement policy now permit and validate deletion.

The recorder retries CSR completion twice, with 250 ms pauses. If completion still fails, or the recording task times out, it attempts to delete the incomplete CSR. The filing role grants delete, and the confinement policy covers DELETE operations and checks the signer name on oldObject when object is null. Tests check the updated permissions and policy.
Task tracking and shutdown drain
crates/enrollment/src/record.rs, crates/enrollment/src/api.rs, crates/enrollment/src/main.rs
Recorder::spawn stores task handles, and Recorder::drain waits for outstanding tasks. The API calls the recorder instance, and the service drains tasks after the HTTP server exits when CSR recording is enabled.

Enrollment recording now cleans up incomplete CSRs, but shutdown can hang or be killed before outstanding recording tasks finish. A deadline-triggered cleanup may also delete a CSR the task did not create. Bound the cleanup, fit the drains within the pod termination budget, and gate deadline cleanup on confirmed creation before merging.

Explanation

Issue #365 has two coding objectives. The completion path in crates/enrollment/src/record.rs retries complete twice with a delay, then deletes the approved-but-incomplete CSR when completion still fails. The recorder checks the required delete certificatesigningrequests access, and the chart grants that permission. Recorder::spawn stores JoinHandle values, removes finished handles, and drain awaits the remaining tasks. crates/enrollment/src/main.rs retains the recorder and calls the drain after the server stops. The reported tests cover retry, cleanup, and drain behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files remain within issue #365. The RBAC and access-check changes enable CSR cleanup. The API change routes recording through the handle-tracking recorder. The main-service change drains recording tasks during shutdown. The admission-policy change confines create, update, and delete operations to the configured signer and service account after adding delete capability. The related chart test updates verify these permissions and policy operations.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 87.50% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 3 files. - Line 23: Extend the CSR signer confinement policy to cover DELETE requests by
validating signerName from oldObject.spec, since object is null on deletion;
keep CREATE and UPDATE checks unchanged. Add a chart assertion that verifies the
ClusterRole grants the DELETE verb.

Review comments at @crates/enrollment/src/main.rs:
- Line 212: Adjust the shutdown sequence around `drain_records` so the HTTP
drain and recording drain together fit within Kubernetes’ 30-second termination
grace period. Reserve up to 10 seconds for recording by shortening the
request-drain budget, or increase the pod’s termination grace period to cover
both phases.

Review comments at @crates/enrollment/src/record.rs:
- Line 322: Update the record flow around recorder.record and RECORD_DEADLINE so
the deadline cannot prevent required cleanup: reserve time within the deadline
for cleanup, or run cleanup with a separate bound after a timed-out operation
when approval has succeeded. Ensure the approved CSR is not left incomplete.
- Line 339: Update the handle-registration path in Recorder::spawn to remove
completed JoinHandles from the handles collection before adding the newly
spawned handle, while retaining handles that are still running.

- Confine the DELETE verb to the service's signer name in the
  ValidatingAdmissionPolicy, using oldObject.spec.signerName since
  object is null on deletion.
- Run cleanup outside the record deadline so a timed-out completion
  still deletes the approved-but-incomplete record.
- Reap finished JoinHandles before adding new ones to prevent
unbounded growth during long-running service operation.

Review comments at @crates/enrollment/src/record.rs:
- Line 329: Bound the cleanup await in the recording flow around
recorder.cleanup(&name) with a separate timeout that fits the shutdown budget,
rather than relying on the record deadline. Report when the cleanup timeout
expires so shutdown cannot wait indefinitely without visibility.
- Line 329: Update the recording task’s `RECORD_DEADLINE` cleanup path so
`Recorder::cleanup` runs only after `Recorder::create` succeeds and the created
CSR’s identity is known. Track that identity and use it to ensure cleanup cannot
delete a pre-existing CSR when creation is still pending or returns
`AlreadyExists`.

- Add a CLEANUP_TIMEOUT (5s) so a hanging API server cannot block the
recording task and shutdown drain indefinitely.
- Track whether create succeeded via AtomicBool so the timeout path
does not delete a pre-existing CSR with the same name.

Thank you for the review @hexfusion. I'm going through another set of comments and push some new version later on today.

- Only retry completion on transient errors (network/5xx), not on 4xx
  refusals that will never succeed.
- Track completion progress so the timeout path does not delete a
  successfully completed record.
- Replace Vec<JoinHandle> with tokio::task::JoinSet, which reaps
  finished tasks automatically.
- Bound drain_records to 4 seconds so the request drain plus a slow
record stays inside the default 30-second grace period.
- Update record() doc to reflect the new cleanup semantics.
