Summary

  • Add concurrent fan-out for NeMo request and response message-slice evaluation.
  • Preserve max_message_checks, shared evaluation deadlines, fail-closed behavior, and early return on blocked results.
  • Preserve deterministic redaction aggregation by applying completed results in message order.
  • Add coverage for latency, early blocking, first/middle/last blocked messages, malformed responses, limits, and deadlines.

Tested

  • cargo test -p praxis-ai-filters --lib guardrails
  • cargo test -p praxis-ai-filters --lib
  • cargo test -p praxis-ai-filters --lib --all-features
  • cargo clippy -p praxis-ai-filters --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings
  • git diff --check
  • Manual six-message integration tests with a real Nemo server, clean requests and blocked messages in the first, middle, and last positions.

Real NeMo integration testing

Manual integration testing was performed with the real NeMo on
127.0.0.1:18000 and the mock upstream configured to dump forwarded messages:

# Terminal 1: start the mock upstream
cd praxis/praxis-ai/examples
python3 mock-vllm.py --port 3000 --dump-messages

# Terminal 2: start Praxis with the real NeMo endpoint
cargo run --bin praxis-ai -- \
  -c /tmp/nemo-guardrails-real.yaml

# Terminal 3: send a six-user-message conversation
curl -sS -X POST \
  -w '\nHTTP Status: %{http_code}\n' \
  http://127.0.0.1:8080/v1/chat/completions \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{ ... }'

The mock upstream confirmed that all message slices were forwarded in the
successful case, with redacted content applied where configured. Blocked
messages placed first, in the middle, and last returned HTTP 403 and were not
forwarded upstream.

Context

Implements the concurrent NeMo Guardrails evaluation work tracked in issue #1686.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Guardrail checks now process message prefixes concurrently, up to 32 at a time, which can reduce delays for requests with multiple messages.
  • Bug Fixes
    • A blocking verdict is returned after all checks already started have finished.
    • Redactions remain associated with their original messages when checks complete out of order, and the latest modified message determines the redaction reason.
    • Requests over the configured check limit are rejected before provider calls; malformed responses and timeout failures continue to fail closed.
    • Only the first response choice is checked.

Walkthrough

The NeMo provider now evaluates message prefixes concurrently, with up to 32 checks in flight. It waits for started checks to finish, then prioritizes blocking verdicts, errors, and ordered non-terminal results. Unit and integration tests cover this behavior and use a body-aware backend.

Changes: NeMo prefix evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Concurrent evaluation and ordered aggregation
filters/Cargo.toml, filters/src/guardrails/providers/nemo.rs
The provider schedules prefix checks concurrently after one deadline check. It waits for started checks to finish before choosing a result. Blocking verdicts take precedence over errors. Otherwise, non-terminal results are sorted by message index before aggregation.
Guardrail behavior tests
filters/src/guardrails/tests.rs
Tests cover concurrent checks, waiting for started checks, ordered redactions, blocking verdicts at different message positions, response choices, message limits, malformed responses, and timeouts.
Body-aware integration backend
tests/utils/src/net/backend/*, tests/utils/src/net/mod.rs, tests/integration/tests/suite/examples/guardrails.rs
The test utilities expose a backend that selects its response from the request body. Integration tests use it and adjust assertions for out-of-order prefixes and message-specific replacements.

Requests with more than 32 messages can make unnecessary NeMo calls and delay a known rejection. The change is otherwise mergeable with this bounded issue addressed or accepted.

Make the early-block test fail under sequential evaluation.

The current fixture blocks prefix index 0 immediately and delays prefix index 1. A sequential evaluator checks the blocked prefix first and returns immediately, so the test passes without proving concurrent evaluation.

Delay the earlier prefix and block the later prefix. Then sequential evaluation waits about 500 ms and fails the elapsed < 300 ms assertion. Rename the test to reflect the later block and earlier slow check.

[P1][Major] Early blocking trips a healthy circuit breaker
nemo.rs:234
Returning a block drops sibling callouts. The pinned Praxis 0.7.5 executor records those cancellations as transport failures. With six prefixes and a failure threshold of five, one blocked result cancels five healthy siblings, and the next safe evaluation fails without contacting NeMo. Intentional cancellation needs neutral circuit accounting.

[P1][Major] Concurrent checks prevent circuit recovery
nemo.rs:232
After the recovery window, the breaker admits one probe. A sibling receives CircuitOpen, and result? drops the admitted probe before it succeeds. Repeated multi-message evaluations therefore keep failing against a recovered provider. Let the recovery probe complete and coordinate remaining checks within the original deadline.

With six prefixes and a failure threshold of five, one blocked result cancels five healthy siblings, and the next safe evaluation fails without contacting NeMo. Intentional cancellation needs neutral circuit accounting.

[P1][Major] Concurrent checks prevent circuit recovery nemo.rs:232 After the recovery window, the breaker admits one probe. A sibling receives CircuitOpen, and result? drops the admitted probe before it succeeds. Repeated multi-message evaluations therefore keep failing against a recovered provider. Let the recovery probe complete and coordinate remaining checks within the original deadline.

Hey @leseb , I addressed them by letting all concurrent NeMo checks complete before returning the final verdict. This avoids treating intentionally dropped sibling callouts as circuit-breaker failures and lets a recovery probe complete normally.

My plan is to defer early-exit cancellation to a follow-up issue because it needs coordinated AI and Praxis core support for neutral cancellation accounting. That will let us restore immediate block returns without affecting circuit-breaker health.

Stop scheduling prefixes after a blocking verdict.

If a prefix blocks while more than 32 checks are configured, this refill still schedules every remaining prefix. The request can issue unnecessary NeMo callouts and delay its known rejection until those checks finish. Once block_reason is set, drain checks already in flight without scheduling new ones. FuturesUnordered polls newly pushed futures on subsequent next() calls. (docs.rs)

Add coverage for MAX_IN_FLIGHT_CHECKS.

The current test sends only six messages, so it cannot detect unbounded fan-out. Configure the fixture with max_message_checks: 40 and send 40 messages with delayed responses. Before the response delay expires, assert that exactly 32 requests have been received. After evaluation completes, assert that all 40 requests have been received.

Add explanatory messages to the new assertions that lack them.

The new tests contain assertions with no message. These are the matches! check on FilterAction::Continue, the request-count assert_eq! calls, and the assert!(evaluation.await.unwrap()) check. A failure in these tests gives no context about the expected behavior. The received_requests().len() assertions at Lines 782 and 978 are the most ambiguous. The other new assertions in the file already carry messages.

Assert the captured prefix contents.

The current assertion checks only message counts. Compare the complete cumulative messages arrays so incorrect roles or content cannot pass.
