What problem does this PR solve?

Issue Number: close #6656

What is changed and how it works?

Preserve the execution order of transactions that conflict on secondary unique indexes, preventing data loss caused by out-of-order REPLACE statements during safe-mode replay.

  • Generate string dependency keys using TiDB’s collation weights instead of lowercase conversion, covering accent equivalence and PAD SPACE semantics.
  • Use complete index metadata and TiDB’s prefix truncation logic to detect conflicts on unique prefix indexes.
  • Include stored generated-column values in conflict detection. For unique indexes containing virtual generated columns or unsupported collations, use a shared index dependency key to serialize affected writes within the dispatcher, even when a primary key is available.

Check List

Tests

  • Unit test
  • Integration test

Questions

Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?
Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?

Release note

Fix a potential data loss issue in MySQL-compatible sinks during safe-mode replay caused by missing transaction dependencies for collation-equivalent values, unique prefix indexes, and unique indexes containing generated columns.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved MySQL conflict detection for unique indexes involving accent-insensitive text, trailing spaces, index prefixes, composite keys, nullable values, and generated columns.
    • Improved dependency detection for integer keys and row updates to help maintain consistent processing order.
    • Preserved index-prefix lengths and generated-column metadata when splitting updates and replaying redo logs, with compatibility for older logs.
  • Tests

    • Added integration coverage for varied MySQL conflict scenarios, including normal replication and redo apply.
    • Included the conflict-key integration test in the light integration test suite.

Walkthrough

Conflict-key generation now uses TiDB index metadata and collation behavior for secondary unique indexes. Redo logs preserve generated-column and index-prefix metadata. Unit and integration tests cover conflict cases and transaction ordering.

Changes: MySQL conflict-key detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate secondary unique-index keys
downstreamadapter/sink/mysql/causality/helper.go, downstreamadapter/sink/mysql/causality/helper_test.go
Row-key generation processes current and previous rows. It derives keys from primary and unique-index metadata, applies TiDB collation-aware encoding, and uses index prefix lengths. Unit tests cover collation, prefix and composite indexes, generated columns, NULLs, unsupported collations, and dependency ordering.
Preserve index metadata in redo events
pkg/common/event/redo.go, pkg/common/event/redo_gen.go, pkg/common/event/redo_test.go, pkg/applier/helper.go, pkg/applier/redo_test.go
Redo logs serialize index prefix lengths and virtual-column flags, then reconstruct generated-column and index metadata. Update splitting preserves prefix lengths. Tests cover redo round trips, legacy logs, and split updates.
Exercise conflicts through MySQL sink
tests/integration_tests/mysql_conflict_keys/conf/*, tests/integration_tests/mysql_conflict_keys/data/test.sql, tests/integration_tests/mysql_conflict_keys/run.sh, tests/integration_tests/run_light_it_in_ci.sh
The integration test defines five table cases and checks normal replication and redo apply. It verifies row counts, checkpoint progress, and synchronized data. The test is added to CI group G05.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in downstreamadapter/sink/mysql/causality/helper_test.go: Added imports for time, table-key encoding, codec encoding, and collation test control used by the new conflict-key coverage.
  • observed — Modified behavior in downstreamadapter/sink/mysql/causality/helper_test.go: The virtual-generated-column test now converts the table’s index metadata into an explicit IndexColumn descriptor before calling genKeyList, rather than passing the table-provided index slice directly.
  • observed — Modified behavior in downstreamadapter/sink/mysql/causality/helper_test.go: Added table-driven tests for secondary unique-index conflict keys, validating collation-sensitive equality, padding, prefixes, composite suffixes, binary and unsupported collations, nullable and generated columns, update key retention, and dependency ordering. The test compares generated conflict keys with TiDB’s index-key encoding and temporarily disables the global collation switch.
  • observed — Modified behavior in tests/integration_tests/mysql_conflict_keys/conf/diff_config.toml: Added the complete diff configuration, including comparison flags, task output and table-selection settings, and MySQL/TiDB source connection definitions.

Explanation

For [#6656], dependency keys use collation weights and prefix truncation to detect secondary unique-key conflicts. Shared index keys serialize writes for virtual generated columns. Redo and update paths preserve the required metadata. Unit and integration tests cover the issue cases and safe-mode replay. The incremental diff was unavailable; the whole-PR summary supports this assessment.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve run_sql_file failures in the conflict-key test.

tests/integration_tests/_utils/run_sql_file pipes each mysql command through tee and log_with_timestamp, but it does not enable pipefail. The helper therefore returns the status of the logger instead of a failed mysql command. Add pipefail in the helper.

If the initial-load command fails before inserting rows, the schema checks still pass, and the pre-replay diff can compare two empty tables. A successful replay then creates the expected final rows, so the upstream row-count check and final diff also pass. The CI job can report success without executing the initial load. Preparation failures are also ignored when the following SQL command succeeds. Replay failures that leave incorrect final row counts are still detected by the checks at lines 75-80 or by the final diff, but those checks do not cover the masked failures above.
