🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Handle partial migration failure.
The migration renames certsDir first. It then recreates the directory and copies service-ca. If MkdirAll or CopyFS fails, certsDir stays without the legacy kube-control-plane-signer. The next start sees no legacy layout and skips the migration. certSetup then generates a new service-ca. The old service-ca stays only in the backup directory. Existing service-serving Secrets then fail trust.
Roll back on failure. Rename backupDir back to certsDir after removing the partial directory. This also handles the TODO of recovering from a partial write.

hi @eslutsky this PR looks good, just one question about tests. Are you planning to add unit and RF tests on a following PR instead of this, right? |

Re: comment by @pacevedom on You're right to call this out. There was a mismatch between the enhancement description and the actual code. The enhancement doc said "fresh-start fallback removes partial The "from scratch" wording in the previous comment was misleading. Updated in 5fb0be3 to accurately describe the actual mechanism: certchains per-signer idempotency + greenboot restart, without removing the partial directory. |
Four-commit plan: certinfo.go path helpers, init.go migration + certSetup() restructuring, kube-apiserver.go flag updates, etcd.go TrustedCAFile update. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
4-task plan covering certinfo.go, init.go, kube-apiserver.go, etcd.go with exact code for each step and compile/test verification commands. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Replace old per-signer root helpers with ClientCADir, ServingCADir, PeerCADir; re-root all leaf helpers under new CA directories; keep unexported legacyKubeControlPlaneSignerDir for migration detection. Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Update all callers of deleted certinfo helpers across etcd/, pkg/cmd/, pkg/components/, and pkg/controllers/ to use the new ClientCADir, ServingCADir, PeerCADir, and KASServingCertDir helpers. Also sync etcd/vendor with the updated certinfo.go so the separate etcd module builds cleanly against the new API. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Add migrateLegacyCertLayout(): atomically renames old certs/ to certs.backup.<version>.<timestamp>/ on first boot after upgrade - Replace 9 old NewCertificateSigner calls with client-ca, serving-ca, peer-ca (3 KAS certs merged into 1 SAN-based kube-apiserver-serving) - Update WithCABundle references to new signer names - Update initKubeconfigs() GetCertKey calls; replace per-signer trust PEM reads with single serving-ca read Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rove stat error handling - Rename parameter 'version' to 'gitVersion' to avoid shadowing the imported version package - Handle non-ErrNotExist errors from os.Stat before attempting os.Rename Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Collapse namedCerts from 3 serving cert entries to 1 (KASServingCertDir) - Update --etcd-cafile, --tls-cert-file, --kubelet-certificate-authority to reference new CA paths - Fix discoverEtcdServers TrustedCAFile: EtcdSignerDir → PeerCADir Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Update TestConfigure to use KASServingCertDir (consolidated helper) instead of the deleted KubeAPIServerLocalhostServingCertDir, matching what the production code already uses. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Remove dead legacyKubeControlPlaneSignerDir from certinfo.go (caller in init.go has its own local copy); also remove from etcd vendor copy - Fix stale admin-kubeconfig-signer strings in metrics.go comment and error message; update metrics.robot doc comment to match - Update Robot Framework test assets and suites to use new CA paths: etcd-signer→peer-ca, kube-control-plane-signer→client-ca, admin-kubeconfig-signer→client-ca, kube-apiserver-*-signer→serving-ca Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Remove agent-generated plan/spec docs from docs/superpowers/ (pacevedom) - Fix otel/observability scrape and collector configs to use new client-ca cert path instead of deleted admin-kubeconfig-signer path (pacevedom: "otel profiles still reading deleted cert paths") - Update kcm-flags.robot cluster-signing paths to client-ca - migrateLegacyCertLayout: sanitize '/' in gitVersion before building backup directory name to prevent os.Rename failure (CodeRabbit) - migrateLegacyCertLayout: restore service-ca after rename so existing in-cluster service-serving Secrets remain trusted through CA transition (CodeRabbit) - initCerts: add comment explaining partial-write recovery via greenboot restart (pacevedom) - certificateauthority.go: update CertificateAuthorityResources to 6-CA consolidated names (pacevedom: "still 12 CAs in this list") - exposeCertificateAuthority: update existing Secret on AlreadyExists so upgraded clusters get fresh CA data (CodeRabbit) Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- certificateauthority.go: fix ServiceAccountKeyResources loop index to use offset len(CertificateAuthorityResources)+i, preventing service- account-key from overwriting client-ca in the Role's resourceNames - createClusterRole: update existing Role on AlreadyExists so upgraded clusters get the new 6-CA Secret names instead of retaining the old 12 - migrateLegacyCertLayout: chmod ca.key to 0600 after os.CopyFS restore; os.CopyFS creates files at 0666 before umask (typically 0644), leaving the CA private key world-readable - migrateLegacyCertLayout: add comment that MicroShift is always single- node with one embedded etcd member, so peer-CA rotation is safe with no cross-member coordination required Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The previous wording "regenerate it from scratch" implied an active cleanup similar to what the enhancement doc described. The actual mechanism is certchains per-signer idempotency: on retry certchains skips already-written signers and regenerates only the missing ones. Update the comment to describe what actually happens. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Five subtests cover the migration function: no-op on fresh install, successful migration with service-ca preservation and ca.key permissions, version slash sanitization in the backup directory name, error when service-ca is absent from the old layout, and idempotency after migration. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…lure If MkdirAll or CopyFS fails after the atomic rename, the rollback closure removes the partial certsDir and renames backupDir back to certsDir so the next startup finds the original layout intact and can retry the migration. The os.CopyFS above recreates files with 0644 permissions, while this is setting the service-ca key to 0600. This means all the other files are left readable for every user, even though the parent dir is 0700 its still worth fixing for consistency.

Wondering if the previous certs are left behind in kube-system after a migration, should we ensure only the ones here exist? These would hold unused keys forever.

Isnt this the same as tls-cert-file and tls-private-key-file options down below? They may as well be redundant now.
- migrateLegacyCertLayout now returns the backupDir path so initCerts can remove it after certSetup succeeds, eliminating stale backup dirs with old CA key material on disk - Chmod failure inside migrateLegacyCertLayout now triggers rollback consistent with the MkdirAll and CopyFS failure paths - Replace single ca.key chmod with a WalkDir that restricts all *.key files restored by os.CopyFS to 0600 - cleanupLegacyCASecrets deletes the 9 pre-consolidation kube-system Secrets that hold unused CA key material after migration - Remove the unnamed default entry from namedCerts; tls-cert-file already covers the default serving cert making it redundant Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Update TestMigrateLegacyCertLayout to destructure the (string, error) return value; the function signature was changed to return a backup path alongside the error, leaving six call sites in the test that still treated it as returning a single value. Summary
Consolidates MicroShift's PKI from 12 CAs to 6, following ProdSec guidance for
single-node deployments. On a single node, separate per-component trust domains
provide no security benefit — this change eliminates unnecessary CA key material,
simplifies certificate renewal, and makes the PKI layout easier to reason about.
