Could we handle existing addressesFromPools.group: "" configurations before switching claim creation to v1beta2? The Machine API permits an empty group, but the v1beta2 claim CRD requires spec.poolRef.apiGroup. I reproduced this with envtest: EnsureIPAddressClaim fails with spec.poolRef.apiGroup: Required value

I'll take a look. I'm sure this is something we can manage.

Configure CRD conversion for the condition fields.
v1beta1 is the storage version, but its condition fields use different paths from v1beta2. The CRD has no spec.conversion, so Kubernetes uses None conversion and only changes apiVersion. A v1beta2 status update can therefore remain under the v1beta1 paths, causing clients to read the wrong condition representation. Add and deploy a conversion webhook that maps both condition representations between versions.

The vendored sigs.k8s.io/cluster-api/api/ipam/v1beta1 package was removed in the vendor cleanup, but the unused import alias was left behind, breaking go vet/go test for this package. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Per feedback in review: since IPAM CRDs are already GA, we cannot introduce v1beta2 and immediately make it the storage version without breaking the API contract. v1beta1 remains served:true/storage:true, and v1beta2 is added as served:true/storage:false so MAO's v1beta2 client goes through conversion for now. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…sClaim The Machine API's AddressesFromPool.Group has always permitted an empty string, but the v1beta2 IPAddressClaim CRD requires spec.poolRef.apiGroup to be non-empty. Since APIGroup is json:"apiGroup, omitempty", an empty pool.Group was silently dropped from the request, causing existing static-IP configurations with an empty group to fail claim creation with "spec.poolRef.apiGroup: Required value". Default to the built-in ipam.cluster.x-k8s.io group in that case, preserving the historical meaning of an empty group. Adds an envtest regression test reproducing the failure against the real CRD. SPLAT-2582
Changes
Notes
This is not a must have, but after recent bumps, we are getting a lot of warning messages about using the deprecated v1beta1 APIs.
After this change happens, installer will also need to be updated to generate IPAM v1beta2 versions of IPAddress and IPAddressClaims for vSphere static IP.
Currently vSphere static IP periodicals for 4.21+ are failing due to crd changes. Once those are fixed, this PR should have the static IP jobs pass with no warning messages for IPAddressClaims.
