OCPBUGS-133542: fix(console): prevent TypeError on component unmount in useEventListener - #17432
Analysis / Root cause:
A fatal TypeError: Cannot read properties of null (reading 'removeEventListener') occurs during router navigation / component unmounting when exiting the YAML editor's fullscreen view (or similar views using Markdown code blocks).
When navigating away (such as by clicking the "Cancel" button in fullscreen mode), the page route changes, and the editor is unmounted. During the cleanup cycle of useEventListener (useEffect return cleanup), the DOM/ref target has already been destroyed and set to null by React. Calling target.removeEventListener on a null object crashes the entire React lifecycle, triggering the global console Error Boundary screen ("Something wrong happened").
Updated the target parameter signature to accept EventTarget | null | undefined.
Added a non-null guard (if (!target) return;) at the beginning of the useEffect block to gracefully bypass listener additions and removals if the DOM target element is already unmounted.
Component Lifecycle & State Cleanup (edit-yaml.tsx):
Modified the YAML editor to explicitly exit fullscreen mode (toggleFullscreen()) before executing the onCancel() navigation callback.
This ensures appropriate state cleanup and browser API release before route unmounting occurs.
Screenshots / screen recording:
Issue behavior (Crash on unmount):
Enter Fullscreen YAML mode -> Click "Cancel" -> Page crashes instantly.
Fixed behavior:
Enter Fullscreen YAML mode -> Click "Cancel" -> UI cleanly navigates back to the parent resource list view with no console crash.
Test setup:
No custom setup required. Standard console build and tests:
yarn build
yarn test
Test cases:
Navigate to Workloads > ConfigMaps, open any ConfigMap YAML, enter Fullscreen mode, and click Cancel. Verify the page returns to the list view without crashing.
Verify copy-to-clipboard and markdown extension hover listeners in help docs or console panels still function normally when the targets are mounted.
Browser conformance:
[X] Chrome
[X] Firefox
[X] Safari (or Epiphany on Linux)
Additional info: This is a robust and elegant fix that prevents similar unmount-race-condition crashes globally across all console components using the useEventListener hook (including markdown widgets, terminals, and logs).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Canceling an edit while in fullscreen now exits fullscreen before closing the editor.
Event handling safely skips listener registration when its target is unavailable; behavior is unchanged when a target is provided.
useEventListener now accepts a nullable or undefined target and skips listener registration when the target is absent. In the YAML editor, Cancel exits fullscreen mode when active before continuing the existing cancellation actions.
The crash fix appears correct and is low-risk to merge, though a focused fullscreen-Cancel test should prevent future regressions.

Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files.

Explanation
The pull request changes only two frontend TypeScript/TSX files. The diff adds no Ginkgo tests or test declarations, and no test title changes. The stable and deterministic test-name check is not applicable.
Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only two TypeScript/TSX frontend files. The diff adds no Ginkgo e2e tests or test constructs such as It(), Describe(), Context(), or When(). Therefore, the MicroShift Test Compatibility check is not applicable.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only a frontend React hook and the YAML editor component. The diff adds a null guard for event-listener cleanup and exits fullscreen on cancel. It does not add or modify deployment manifests, operators, controllers, replicas, affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, or PDBs. The topology-aware scheduling check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only two TypeScript/TSX frontend files: useEventListener.ts and edit-yaml.tsx. It does not change an OpenShift Tests Extension binary or process-level Go code, so it cannot introduce a non-JSON stdout write in main(), suite setup, or a top-level initializer.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request changes only two frontend TypeScript/TSX files. It adds no Ginkgo e2e tests, IPv4 assumptions, or external connectivity requirements. The IPv6 and disconnected-network test compatibility check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only event-listener null handling and fullscreen cancellation. The added code contains no MD5, SHA1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB, custom cryptography, or secret/token comparison logic.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
The pull request changes only two TypeScript files: useEventListener.ts and edit-yaml.tsx. The diff adds no container or Kubernetes manifest fields, and no changed line contains privileged, host namespace settings, SYS_ADMIN, or allowPrivilegeEscalation.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
The pull request adds no logging calls or log payloads. The changed code only adds a null guard in useEventListener and exits fullscreen before YAML cancellation. The diff contains no passwords, tokens, API keys, PII, session IDs, internal hostnames, or customer data exposed through logs.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the root cause, the code changes in both files, and the manual test steps. It also has screenshots and a browser checklist. It omits a few template items: the title Jira prefix is not in the description body and the reviewers/assignees section is missing. The test results for the build and test commands are not reported. The description has an unclear claim about 'browser API release' that is not reflected in the diff summary.

Trace the reported cleanup error to its source.
If this effect registers a listener, its cleanup retains the non-null target used for registration. A later null target therefore cannot cause this cleanup to read removeEventListener from null. The reported stack instead points to componentWillUnmount, so this guard does not fix that failure. Find the failing cleanup and remove the listener from the target that received it. React also runs an old effect’s cleanup before setting up the effect for a changed target. (react.dev)

Add a focused regression test for fullscreen Cancel.
edit-yaml.spec.tsx only tests getEditor; it does not mount EditYAML or click Cancel. Add a test that activates fullscreen, clicks Cancel, and asserts fullscreen exit, onCancel(), and closeOLS() dispatch. Without this coverage, a future edit can remove one of these effects while the test suite remains green.
