CONSOLE-5550: Restore object-src restriction and harden CSP defaults - #17431
CSP directive construction unintentionally changed object-src from 'none' to 'self'. Restore the restriction agreed at CCSIG and add the fixed media, child, and worker restrictions.
Solution description:
Emit object-src 'none', media-src 'none', child-src 'none', and worker-src 'self', including off-cluster development. Same-origin workers remain permitted for Console's load-test service worker and Monaco editor workers. Existing frame-src 'none' and frame-ancestors 'none' remain unchanged.
Keep the six existing plugin-configurable directives unchanged. Do not add ObjectSrc, MediaSrc, ChildSrc, or WorkerSrc to ConsolePlugin.spec.contentSecurityPolicy. No API dependency bump or console-operator change is required for this revised scope.
Reject literal commas, semicolons, and line breaks in configured source lists before a CSP header is emitted. This prevents administrator-supplied raw configuration from inserting an earlier directive that would override the fixed value. Normal space-separated source lists, quoted CSP keywords, and URL-encoded commas and semicolons remain supported. The plugin API already rejects these literal separators. YAML source values are preserved until policy validation instead of being reparsed as comma-separated flag entries. This prevents literal commas from silently dropping or rewriting configured sources. CSP environment settings override YAML, and CLI arguments override both; unrelated directives remain merged. Direct callers of the policy builder are also protected by comma rejection. If policy construction fails, the page handler logs the error and returns HTTP 500 without rendering Console HTML or emitting a partial CSP header. It does not terminate Bridge.
Screenshots / screen recording:
Backend policy change. Existing local Chrome evidence is retained; screenshots can be attached during review.
Test setup:
Production-built local Bridge against OpenShift 5.1.0-ec.1 with certificate verification enabled for the policy/workflow checks. The cluster Console deployment was unchanged. The follow-up input validation was tested with a rebuilt local Bridge and temporary loopback ports.
Test cases:
Complete repository backend checks in Linux: all 27 tested packages passed; gofmt and go vet passed.
Race detection passed for pkg/utils, pkg/serverconfig, and pkg/server.
YAML regression tests cover literal comma preservation, attempted extra flag entries, URL-encoded separators, nil-map initialization, CSP config/environment/CLI precedence, and incompatible flag registration. The new YAML handler cases returned HTTP 200 before the correction and HTTP 500 afterward in all three modes.
Handler regressions (21 cases, including six YAML configuration cases) cover rejected commas, semicolons, carriage returns, line feeds, and CRLF in default, report-only, and enforcing modes. Each case checks HTTP 500, no rendered Console HTML or partial policy header, and successful handling of a subsequent request with valid configuration.
Red/green regression: 42 literal-semicolon/line-break cases failed on the old implementation and passed with the correction. Six additional direct-map comma cases failed before comma validation and passed with it. Valid source lists, quoted keywords, and percent-encoded commas and semicolons remain accepted.
Rebuilt Bridge: 42/42 invalid CLI cases rejected before emitting a policy; 8/8 valid/header cases passed; 10/10 YAML configuration cases passed across enforce and report-only modes. Invalid source validation occurs at page policy construction, not at process startup. These CLI/YAML matrices preceded the handler error-handling correction.
Previously completed policy/workflow checks: production frontend build; Chrome 23/23 enforcement and 23/23 report-only resource/worker matrices; live API dry runs 10/10; Monaco schema validation; ConfigMap create/edit/live update; networking form; monitoring query; actual load-test service-worker integration. These browser checks were not repeated for the source-list validation or handler error-handling follow-ups.
Native macOS full-run limitation: Helm fixture packages pkg/helm/actions and pkg/helm/chartproxy failed against localhost registries; the isolated Linux full run passed.
A follow-up source review identified process termination when the page handler received a CSP validation error. The handler regression reproduced termination before the correction and passes afterward.
Additional info:
Enforcement deliberately blocks object/embed and audio/video loads, plus blob/data worker sources. The original configurable-ObjectSrc proposal is withdrawn from this scope. These checks do not certify every external plugin. Full live UI at a non-root base path remained limited by the local setup; the same loading failure reproduced with the original policy. Default report-only mode is unchanged. connect-src, COOP, and the dynamic plugin SDK API are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Content Security Policy now blocks object, media, and child resources while restricting workers to the same origin. These directives are fixed and cannot be changed through plugin settings or the CLI.
Invalid source values containing commas, semicolons, or line breaks are rejected.
Invalid CSP configuration returns an error for the affected request instead of terminating the server.
Documentation
Clarified how CSP directives and sources are configured, and that CSP mode controls whether violations are reported or blocked—not which sources are allowed.
Vendor the API changes needed by the draft ObjectSrc implementation. The temporary API revision must be replaced with a published merged upstream commit, with checksums and vendor regenerated, before this PR is ready for merge.
Merge plugin object sources into the existing object-src directive. Add fixed media-src and child-src restrictions and allow same-origin workers for load-test.sw.js. Document rollout and rollback sequencing and cover configuration and generated headers.
Warning: The referenced jira issue has an invalid target version for the target branch this PR targets: expected the story to target the "5.1.0" version, but no target version was set.
The temporary API revision b21b742b40ce is not resolvable upstream. Replace the dependency pin, regenerate vendor files and checksums, and pass dependency verification before marking this PR ready.
Analysis / Root cause:
ConsolePlugin object-source declarations need Bridge support to reach the aggregated CSP header. Media, child, and worker source policies also need explicit defaults instead of inheriting default-src.
Solution description:
Map ObjectSrc to object-src and merge plugin sources with Console's existing object-src defaults. Always emit media-src 'none', child-src 'none', and worker-src 'self'. The worker exception preserves the same-origin load-test.sw.js service worker. These three directives are deliberately not configurable through ConsolePlugin. Leave connect-src and COOP behavior unchanged.
Add regression coverage for configuration mapping, aggregated policies, in-cluster and off-cluster defaults, and response headers. Document ObjectSrc usage, fixed restrictions, and deployment/rollback requirements.
Screenshots / screen recording:
No visual changes. Add browser verification evidence if needed.
Test setup:
Use the updated API definitions and run Go tests with -mod=vendor. Enable ObjectSrc declarations only after both the updated ConsolePlugin CRD and compatible Bridge are deployed.
Test cases:
go test -mod=vendor ./pkg/utils ./pkg/serverconfig ./pkg/server -count=1: all three packages passed after the upstream rebase.
ObjectSrc values reach the aggregated object-src directive while retaining default sources.
media-src and child-src always emit 'none'; worker-src always emits 'self'.
Header tests cover report-only and enforcing modes.
Previous local Chromium smoke test exercised the actual load-test.sw.js with an enforcing CSP header; not a new post-rebase full Console/browser run.
Full documented ./test-backend.sh -p 2: passed in a disposable Linux/arm64 Go 1.26.10 container, including coverage, all backend tests, gofmt and explicit go vet. Both Helm packages passed. Native macOS execution failed due to its occupied port 5000 and subprocess cleanup behavior.
After final API repin: regenerate vendor and checksums and rerun dependency verification and backend checks.
DEPENDENCY PENDING: the current API pin is a temporary unpublished revision. Do not publish this draft as merge-ready. After the API PR merges, pin the published merged commit, regenerate vendor/go.sum, review the generated diff, and revalidate.
Rollout: deploy the updated CRD and compatible Bridge before adding ObjectSrc declarations. Before rollback to an older Bridge, remove all ObjectSrc declarations and wait for the operator to update Console configuration.

Walkthrough
The CSP builder emits fixed directives and rejects configured source values containing policy separators. When policy construction fails, the index handler returns HTTP 500. Configuration parsing, tests, and documentation describe these rules.
Configuration loading validates the CSP flag and returns configuration errors. YAML sources are stored without treating commas as separators. Environment and CLI values take precedence over YAML values.
Policy directives and source validation pkg/utils/utils.go, pkg/utils/utils_test.go, README.md
The policy includes fixed object-src 'none', media-src 'none', child-src 'none', and worker-src 'self' directives. The builder rejects source values containing commas, semicolons, or line breaks. Tests and documentation cover policy contents and configuration rules.
When CSP construction fails, the index handler logs the error and returns HTTP 500. Tests cover invalid values across CSP modes and verify that a subsequent valid request renders the Console page.
The CSP changes are ready to merge after normal checks; no actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality
Explanation
The pull request adds standard Go testing functions only. The changed test files contain no Ginkgo It, BeforeEach, AfterEach, Eventually, or Consistently blocks, and no cluster-resource operations. The Ginkgo-specific quality check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility
Explanation
No new Ginkgo e2e tests were added. The pull request changes unit tests in pkg/server, pkg/serverconfig, and pkg/utils; the added tests use Test... functions and contain no new It, Describe, Context, or When declarations. Therefore, the MicroShift API compatibility check does not apply.
Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request adds only standard Go unit tests in pkg/server, pkg/serverconfig, and pkg/utils. The reviewed diff adds no Ginkgo tests, e2e tests, or multi-node topology assumptions. SNO-specific protection is therefore not required.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request changes only README.md and CSP/server configuration, handler, and utility tests. The authoritative diff contains no deployment manifests, operator code, controllers, replica settings, affinity, topology spread constraints, node selectors, tolerations, or PDBs. Therefore it introduces no topology-dependent scheduling constraints.
Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract
Explanation
The pull request does not modify an OTE binary or process-level test setup. The only added logging call is klog.Errorf inside pkg/server/server.go's HTTP request handler, not main, init, TestMain, or suite setup. The added tests use ordinary Test... functions and add no stdout writes. Repository searches found no OTE/Ginkgo suite entry points.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request adds only standard Go unit tests under pkg/server, pkg/serverconfig, and pkg/utils. The authoritative diff adds no Ginkgo e2e tests or Ginkgo markers. The example URLs and localhost reporting endpoint are used as test data, not external connections.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
The pull-request diff adds CSP validation, fixed CSP directives, configuration handling, error handling, and tests. It adds no MD5, SHA1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, or ECB usage, custom cryptography, or non-constant-time secret or token comparisons. The existing crypto/rand usage is unchanged.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
The pull request changes only README.md and Go source/test files. The authoritative diff contains no container or Kubernetes manifest changes and no additions to privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, or allowPrivilegeEscalation settings.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
The pull request adds one error log in pkg/server/server.go. The logged error contains only fixed text and the CSP directive key from BuildCSPDirectives; it does not include CSP source values, passwords, tokens, API keys, session IDs, PII, or customer data. The handler returns a generic HTTP 500 message, and no changed log statement records request or configuration contents.
Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names
Explanation
The standing failure remains. pkg/utils/utils_test.go:219 uses t.Run(directive+"/"+source, ...), so each test title embeds the CSP payload, including semicolons and CR/LF characters. The title changes when rejection inputs change. pkg/serverconfig/config_test.go:95 also uses the full source payload as a subtest title.
Resolution
Replace payload-based titles with fixed, unique case labels. For example, use directive+"/semicolon-object-src", directive+"/semicolon-media-src", directive+"/semicolon-child-src", directive+"/semicolon-worker-src", directive+"/terminal-semicolon", directive+"/crlf", and directive+"/line-feed". Keep the CSP payload in the test body. Replace t.Run(source, ...) in TestCSPConfigPreservesSources with stable labels such as encoded-comma, multiple-directive-looking-values, and encoded-separators.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 16.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 12 functions across 6 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Add ObjectSrc merge regression coverage after restoring ObjectSrc support.
The six cases correctly cover the current fixed object-src 'none' output for inputs without plugin ObjectSrc values. They do not detect omission of plugin sources. Add on-cluster and off-cluster fixtures with contentSecurityPolicy["object-src"] and assert the prior defaults plus the plugin source after the API enum, configuration mapping, and generator support are restored. Adding those fixtures to the current head would instead hit its invalid-directive path.
No explicit repository requirement for these two cases was found. This is recommended regression coverage, not a functional failure in the current empty-input assertions.

Return HTTP 500 without rendering Console HTML when CSP construction fails,
rather than terminating Bridge from a page request. Add handler regressions
for all rejected delimiters and CSP modes, including subsequent requests.
Populate the CSP flag without passing YAML sources through MultiKeyValue.Set.
A YAML source containing a literal comma is currently discarded before BuildCSPDirectives validates it. addContentSecurityPolicy ignores the fs.Set error, so the index handler can return HTTP 200 with a CSP header that omits the configured source.
Populate the existing MultiKeyValue directly. Guard an absent flag and initialize a nil map. Parse reapplies environment variables and CLI arguments after loading YAML, so this preserves their precedence while keeping validation in the nonfatal HTTP 500 path.
