Analysis / Root cause:
LoginFunc in pkg/auth/oauth2/auth.go built the OIDC auth URL with no options, so external OIDC providers never returned a refresh token. Without one, the OIDC login path can only serve a session from the pod that holds it in memory: after the access token expires, after a pod restart, or when a request is load-balanced to another replica, the session cannot be recovered and the user is bounced to an interactive login — a re-auth loop behind a load balancer that can't do session affinity.

This is part of the GCP Hosted Control Plane PoC (HyperShift control-plane-side console bridge, openshift/hypershift#9622), where the console bridge runs with multiple replicas behind a load balancer and session affinity cannot be assumed. The session-stickiness story relies on this refresh-token cookie plus per-pod session cookie names (POD_NAME env injected by console-operator).

Solution description:
Add access_type=offline + prompt=consent (oauth2.AccessTypeOffline, oauth2.ApprovalForce) to the AuthCodeURL call in LoginFunc, gated to the AuthSourceOIDC auth source only. Google does not honor the standard offline_access scope; these request params are the supported mechanism. The OpenShift OAuth source is unchanged (empty options ⇒ identical call). With a refresh token available, getLoginState in pkg/auth/oauth2/auth_oidc.go can do a silent back-channel refresh to rebuild the session on any replica.

Screenshots / screen recording:

Test setup:
Configure the console bridge with an external OIDC auth source (e.g. Google) and multiple bridge replicas behind a load balancer without session affinity.

Test cases:

  • Log in via OIDC and confirm the provider returns a refresh token (consent prompt shown for Google).
  • Let the access token expire / restart the bridge pod / hit a different replica behind the LB — session is recovered silently via back-channel refresh, no re-auth loop.
  • OpenShift OAuth login path is unchanged (auth URL built with identical parameters as before).

Browser conformance:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Safari (or Epiphany on Linux)

(Backend-only change; browser matrix likely N/A.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Authentication
    • OpenID Connect sign-in now requests offline access and displays a consent prompt, which may affect the authorization steps users see when signing in.
    • OpenShift OAuth sign-in continues without these options.

LoginFunc built the auth URL with no options, so external OIDC providers never
returned a refresh token. Without one, the OIDC login path can only serve a
session from the pod that holds it in memory: after the access token expires,
after a pod restart, or when a request is load-balanced to another replica, the
session cannot be recovered and the user is bounced to an interactive login (a
re-auth loop behind a load balancer that can't do session affinity).

Add access_type=offline + prompt=consent to AuthCodeURL for the OIDC auth source
only (Google does not honor the standard offline_access scope; these request
params are the supported mechanism). The OpenShift OAuth source is unchanged
(empty options => identical call). This lets getLoginState do a silent
back-channel refresh to rebuild the session on any replica.

Walkthrough

The OAuth2 authenticator now stores its configured auth source. OIDC authorization requests include access_type=offline and prompt=consent; OpenShift OAuth requests keep their previous options.

Entra sessions will not gain the intended cross-replica recovery with default scopes, and repeat logins may show unnecessary consent prompts. These are bounded issues with a scope-configuration workaround, but the provider behavior should be addressed.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes all required template sections and explains the root cause, solution, setup, and test cases. It identifies the provider-specific review concern. Screenshots and browser testing are correctly marked as not applicable for this backend-only change, although test results and reviewers remain pending.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

The pull request changes only pkg/auth/oauth2/auth.go; it adds no Ginkgo test or It() block. Therefore the test structure, cleanup, timeout, assertion-message, consistency, and informing-test checks are not applicable.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request changes only pkg/auth/oauth2/auth.go. The diff adds OAuth2 login behavior and no Ginkgo tests or test declarations such as It, Describe, Context, or When. MicroShift test compatibility is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request changes only pkg/auth/oauth2/auth.go. The diff adds OIDC authorization options and stores AuthSource; it does not modify deployment manifests, operator code, controllers, replica settings, affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, or PDBs. No topology-aware scheduling check is applicable.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

The pull request changes only pkg/auth/oauth2/auth.go. The changed code stores AuthSource, builds OAuth options, and sends an HTTP redirect. It adds no stdout writes, logging setup, or process-level suite code. The repository also has no OTE suite entrypoints such as RunSpecs or BeforeSuite.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS — The pull request changes only pkg/auth/oauth2/auth.go. It adds no Ginkgo e2e tests (It, Describe, Context, or When), so this IPv6 and disconnected-network test compatibility check is not applicable.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

The PR changes only pkg/auth/oauth2/auth.go. Added code stores AuthSource and adds OAuth authorization options for OIDC. It introduces no MD5, SHA1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB mode, custom cryptography, or secret/token comparisons. Existing crypto/rand state generation is unchanged.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

The pull request changes only pkg/auth/oauth2/auth.go. It adds OIDC OAuth request options and stores AuthSource. It does not modify a container or Kubernetes manifest, and it introduces no privileged, host namespace, SYS_ADMIN, root, or allowPrivilegeEscalation setting.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds no logging. It only stores AuthSource and passes oauth2.AccessTypeOffline and oauth2.ApprovalForce to AuthCodeURL for OIDC logins. The existing log statements are unchanged, and the new options contain no passwords, tokens, API keys, PII, session IDs, hostnames, or customer data.

Include offline_access for Microsoft Entra OIDC.

The changed branch adds access_type=offline, but the OIDC scope remains append(c.ExtraScopes, "openid"). Microsoft Entra requires the offline_access scope to issue a refresh token. With default ExtraScopes, getLoginState cannot recover a session on another replica because it only refreshes when a refresh-token cookie exists.

Make scope construction provider-aware at cmd/bridge/config/auth/authoptions.go:302. Add offline_access for Entra issuers while retaining the existing Google parameters and manual ExtraScopes support.
