OCPBUGS-128587: remove SSRF protections and sanitize responses - #17416
openshift-priv/console#61 (OCPBUGS-122003) addressed a SSRF vulnerability (CVE-2026-75888), but in the process it blocked a feature which customers rely on: the ability to host Helm assets locally on a cluster or elsewhere on a private (e.g., corporate) network.
The challenge is that the requirements for addressing the CVE -- blocking port scans and preventing other inappropriate accesses to private networks -- are in direct conflict with the requirements of the local-hosting feature.
Solution description:
Rather than blocking accesses, the change in this PR blocks the effects of those accesses removing the vector for an exploit.
The CVE cites two exploits:
a partial-read SSRF resulting from a parse error reflected to the user containing response-body excerpts
blind in-cluster port-scanning
This PR includes changes sanitizing the errors returned by requests to the Helm APIs in the console backend. Any error relating to host identities, presence, or connection problems is reported as an index/chart not-found error. This removes the ability to co-opt these APIs for gaining information about an otherwise inaccessible network. Analogously, the APIs have been hardened to ensure that they do not return the payloads from the requests which they make on behalf of their callers except when they are validated repository indices or charts. This ensures that the APIs will not function as "open proxies" for forged requests.
Skipping CI for Draft Pull Request.
If you want CI signal for your change, please convert it to an actual PR.

Chart URL and repository checks reject loopback targets and allow private addresses. Chart actions use shared loading helpers. Chart and repository fetch errors are sanitized before they are returned to clients.
Chart actions use shared locate and load helpers. Sanitizers classify chart errors and preserve selected structural or post-fetch errors. The verifier handler sanitizes failures in its existing 502 response.
Repository URL checks and index errors pkg/helm/chartproxy/repos.go, pkg/helm/chartproxy/repos_test.go
Repository URL validation, connection handling, and redirects reject loopback or unspecified targets. Index request, status, read, and parse failures return classified errors.
The change deliberately allows private and cluster-local chart and repository URLs, but the remaining loopback block can be bypassed through DNS rebinding or through a configured HTTP proxy. Fix the connect-time loopback enforcement before merging, or explicitly accept this residual exposure.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description explains the root cause and solution and identifies the backend-only scope. The test setup and test cases sections are not completed, but the description is otherwise sufficiently detailed.
Full details: Test Structure And Quality
Explanation
PASS — The pull request adds or modifies only standard Go tests that use testing.T, t.Run, require, assert, and t.Cleanup. It does not add or modify Ginkgo It blocks, Eventually, Consistently, BeforeEach, or AfterEach code. Therefore, the Ginkgo-specific quality requirements do not apply.
Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility
Explanation
No new Ginkgo e2e tests were added. The pull request changes Go unit tests under pkg/helm and pkg/utils; the added test code uses standard testing APIs such as t.Run and no It, Describe, Context, or When declarations. Therefore the MicroShift API compatibility check is not applicable.
Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request adds or modifies only standard Go unit tests with func Test... and testing.T. The changed tests do not use Ginkgo It, Describe, Context, or When, and they do not assume multiple nodes or HA behavior. The SNO compatibility check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes Helm fetch, URL validation, error sanitization, handlers, utilities, and tests only. The authoritative diff contains no deployment manifests, operators, controllers, replicas, affinity, topology spread, node selectors, tolerations, or PDB changes. The topology-aware scheduling check is not applicable.
Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract
Explanation
No changed process-level code writes to stdout. The new klog calls are in regular chart and repository helper functions, not main, init, TestMain, or suite setup. The changed TestMain only calls configuration helpers and writes existing diagnostics explicitly to os.Stderr. The added package-level initializers perform assignment or regexp compilation and emit no output.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
PASS. The pull request adds or changes only Go unit tests under pkg/helm and pkg/utils. The changed test files use testing.T and contain no new Ginkgo It, Describe, Context, or When tests. The IPv4 literals are isolated unit-test fixtures, not new Ginkgo e2e tests. No public-internet or external-service test dependency is introduced under this check.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
The pull-request diff introduces no MD5, SHA1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, or ECB usage. It adds no custom cryptography and no non-constant-time comparison of secrets or tokens. The only crypto imports in changed files are pre-existing TLS/X.509 imports, and the new authentication logic classifies error text rather than comparing secret values.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
The pull request changes 19 Go files only. It adds no container or Kubernetes manifest. The only matching token is Capabilities: common.DefaultCapabilities in a Helm test, not a container security setting. No privileged, host namespace, SYS_ADMIN, or allowPrivilegeEscalation configuration is introduced.
Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names
Explanation
The pull request adds unstable subtest titles. pkg/helm/actions/ssrf_regression_test.go:43,60 uses URL/IP values via t.Run(raw, ...). pkg/helm/fetcherr/errors_test.go:21 uses error text via t.Run(msg, ...). pkg/helm/handlers/handler_chartVerifier_test.go:166 uses request bodies containing URLs/IPs via t.Run(body, ...). pkg/utils/net_test.go:85 uses hostnames and IP addresses via t.Run(tt.host, ...). These values can change between runs and violate the stable test-name requirement.
Resolution
Add static name fields to the affected test-case structs or parallel name slices. Use t.Run(tc.name, ...) in all four locations. Keep raw, msg, body, and host in test setup and assertions only.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
The PR still adds raw sensitive-data logging. pkg/helm/actions/chart_fetch.go:15 logs the unsanitized LocateChart error, and :24 logs both the chart path and raw loader error before sanitization. The added fetcherr tests show these errors can contain private hostnames, URLs, connection addresses, local paths, and response payloads. pkg/helm/chartproxy/repos.go:162 logs the raw HTTP error, which can include connection details, and also logs hr.Name, sourced from repository metadata. The sanitizers affect returned errors only; they do not affect these klog entries.
Resolution
Remove raw error, path, URL, and repository-name values from the new logs in locateChart, loadLocatedChart, and helmRepo.IndexFile. Log only a fixed event or an allowlisted non-sensitive category after sanitization. Add log-capture tests that verify private hostnames, credentials, response bodies, connection addresses, paths, and customer-controlled repository values are absent.

openshift-priv/console#61 (OCPBUGS-122003) addressed a SSRF vulnerability (CVE-2026-75888), but in the process it blocked a feature which customers rely on: the ability to host Helm assets locally on a cluster or elsewhere on a private (e.g., corporate) network.
Chart and repository URLs can now use private-network and cluster-local addresses, while localhost and other loopback targets remain blocked.
Chart URLs support additional valid hostname and IPv6 formats, including optional ports.
Bug Fixes
Fetch and verification errors now show safer, more general messages without exposing upstream response details, connection information, or retrieved content.
Invalid chart and repository responses are reported with clearer error categories.
Instructions for interacting with me using PR comments are available here. If you have questions or suggestions related to my behavior, please file an issue against the openshift-eng/jira-lifecycle-plugin repository.
Map the non-chart response to the same not-found error in fetcherr, not in the test.
SanitizeChartError maps unreachable hosts and refused connections to ErrChartFileNotFound. It maps a response that reaches notAChart to ErrNotHelmChart. A reachable server that returns a non-chart body therefore gets a different message than a closed port. The chart verifier accepts private and cluster-local URLs, so an authenticated user can use this difference to see which in-cluster services respond. The PR description states that presence and connection errors should be reported as not found, so this conflicts with the PR's goal of preventing in-cluster port scanning.
Change the sanitizer, not only the test assertions. The handler returns the sanitizer's message, so changing only the test expectations would make the test fail. The remaining distinct messages also need review: safeChartStructureError returns Chart.yaml file is missing and no files in chart archive unchanged, and SanitizeChartLoadError returns ErrNotHelmChart for archives that were already retrieved. A correct fix needs to decide how all of these branches are handled. The fetch path and the index path (ErrIndexNotHelm versus ErrIndexFileNotFound) may have the same issue. Update the test's non-chart payload case to match the new behavior.

Treat this check as advisory because Helm resolves the hostname again later.
HostTargetsLoopback resolves the hostname here through lookupChartHost. Helm's downloader resolves it again when it fetches the chart. An attacker-controlled DNS name can return a public address now and 127.0.0.1 on the later lookup. The loopback check is bypassed in that case.
This check cannot close that gap. Enforce the loopback block at connect time in the chart download transport, as httpClient does in pkg/helm/chartproxy/repos.go. Alternatively, document that this validator is only a pre-check.

Resolve the host once and dial the checked IP.
The dial hook resolves host in HostTargetsLoopback. It then calls dialer.DialContext(ctx, network, addr), which resolves host a second time. These two steps are a time-of-check to time-of-use gap. A DNS name can return a public IP for the check and 127.0.0.1 for the dial. The check also returns false when the lookup fails, so a transient failure followed by a successful dial lookup bypasses the block.
Resolve the host once, reject loopback and unspecified IPs, then dial the resolved IP.

Reject unspecified addresses (0.0.0.0 and ::) as loopback targets.
HostTargetsLoopback returns false for 0.0.0.0 and ::, because net.IP.IsLoopback is false for them. On Linux, a connection to 0.0.0.0 or :: reaches the local host. A URL such as http://0.0.0.0:8080/x.tgz therefore passes these checks:
validateChartURLStrict
validateRepoURL
the DialContext check in httpClient
The old IsPrivateOrReservedIP blocked these addresses. The existing test TestIsPrivateOrReservedIP expects both to return true. This change removes that protection and does not replace it.
The same gap applies to hostnames that resolve to an unspecified address.
Add IsUnspecified() to both checks. Also add 0.0.0.0 and :: cases to TestHostTargetsLoopback.

Check the repository target when a proxy handles the request.
When HTTP_PROXY or HTTPS_PROXY applies, DialContext receives the proxy address. This check then validates the proxy, not the repository target. If the proxy resolves a repository hostname to loopback after validateRepoURL accepted it, the request can reach a loopback service. CheckRedirect does not resolve hostname redirects either. Enforce the target restriction for proxied requests and redirects, or use a proxy that enforces the same restriction. Pinning the IP inside this dial hook alone does not fix the proxy route. (go.dev)

Bind the checked address to the repository connection.
If an attacker-controlled hostname first resolves to a public address, HostTargetsLoopback accepts it. In pkg/helm/chartproxy/repos.go, httpClient then calls net.Dialer.DialContext with the hostname, which resolves it again. A subsequent loopback answer can connect to a blocked local port. Resolve and check the addresses used for the connection, then dial an approved literal address while retaining the hostname for HTTP and TLS. (pkg.go.dev)

Analysis / Root cause:
openshift-priv/console#61 (OCPBUGS-122003) addressed a SSRF vulnerability (CVE-2026-75888), but in the process it blocked a feature which customers rely on: the ability to host Helm assets locally on a cluster or elsewhere on a private (e.g., corporate) network.
This PR includes changes sanitizing the errors returned by requests to the Helm APIs in the console backend. Any error relating to host identities, presence, or connection problems is reported as an index/chart not-found error. This removes the ability to co-opt these APIs for gaining information about an otherwise inaccessible network. Analogously, the APIs have been hardened to ensure that they do not return the payloads from the requests which they make on behalf of their callers except when they are validated repository indices or charts. This ensures that the APIs will not function as "open proxies" for forged requests.
