What

Gate the console config observer's servingInfo.tlsGroups observation on the TLSGroupPreferences feature gate, and resolve FIPS mode once at startup instead of on every observation.

Why

On a 5.0 -> 5.1 metal-ipi-ovn upgrade, clusteroperator/console was going Progressing=True (reason SyncLoopRefresh) inside the window where clusteroperator/machine-config is Progressing=True, failing the invariant that console must stay Progressing=False while MCO is progressing.

Root cause, from the CI timelines: the config observer managed tlsGroups on every cluster, even where TLSGroupPreferences is disabled. TLSProfileSpec.Groups is itself API-gated on TLSGroupPreferences, so on a disabled cluster the APIServer resource has no groups, yet the observer sourced groups from the static configv1.TLSProfiles map and emitted them anyway. During the upgrade this produced a transient console-config change (tlsGroups added, then removed .... an A->B->A flap, confirmed by the gen-8 Deployment reusing the gen-6 ReplicaSet and the final config having no tlsGroups). The extra rollout's Progressing=True window overlapped the long MCO reboot window on metal-ipi, tripping the invariant. Re-reading FIPS from procfs on every observation was a second potential source of churn on the same path.

How

  • tlsGroups is now emitted only when TLSGroupPreferences is enabled. When disabled, the observer omits it, which also clears any previously observed value from observedConfig. minTLSVersion and cipherSuites are not gated and continue to be observed.
  • FIPS mode is resolved once at startup (it is an immutable property of the node's kernel) and passed into the observer, rather than read per observation.
  • Both flags are threaded through the config observer's Listers.

On disabled clusters (all current clusters, including CI) no tlsGroups is written, so console-config matches the pre-upgrade state and the extra rollout no longer happens. On gate-enabled clusters, tlsGroups is emitted once and stays stable.

Test plan

  • go build ./...
  • go vet ./pkg/console/...
  • gofmt clean
  • go test ./pkg/console/... (all pass)
  • Added a unit test asserting tlsGroups is omitted when TLSGroupPreferences is disabled, while minTLSVersion is still observed.
  • Verify against the metal-ipi-ovn upgrade job that console no longer goes Progressing=True during the MCO window.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • TLS security profile observations now respect whether TLS group preferences are enabled: when disabled, TLS groups are omitted while the minimum TLS version remains reported.
    • TLS group filtering now reflects the node’s FIPS mode, making observed TLS settings consistent with the active security configuration.

The console config observer managed servingInfo.tlsGroups on every cluster,
even where the TLSGroupPreferences feature gate is disabled, and re-read FIPS
state from procfs on every observation. During a 5.0->5.1 upgrade this produced
a transient console-config change (tlsGroups added then removed), causing an
extra console Deployment rollout whose SyncLoopRefresh Progressing=True window
overlapped the machine-config Progressing window on slow metal-ipi upgrades,
violating the "console stays Progressing=False while MCO is Progressing=True"
invariant.

Gate the tlsGroups observation on the TLSGroupPreferences feature gate so the
operator does not manage tlsGroups when the gate is disabled, and resolve FIPS
mode once at startup (it is an immutable kernel property) instead of per
observation. Both flags are threaded through the config observer's Listers.

Walkthrough

The config observer now receives TLS group-preferences and FIPS state at startup. It uses those values to control TLS group observation and FIPS-based group filtering.

Changes

TLS security-profile observation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pass TLS feature state to the observer
pkg/console/starter/starter.go, pkg/console/configobservation/configobservercontroller/observe_config_controller.go, pkg/console/configobservation/listers.go, pkg/console/configobservation/apiserver/tls_fips.go
RunOperator passes the TLS group-preferences gate and FIPS state to NewConfigObserver. The observer stores these values in Listers. The FIPS detection function is exported as IsFIPSEnabled.
Apply flags to TLS observations
pkg/console/configobservation/apiserver/observe_tlssecurityprofile.go, pkg/console/configobservation/apiserver/observe_tlssecurityprofile_test.go
The observer omits tlsGroups when TLS group preferences are disabled and uses the supplied FIPS value for group filtering. Tests cover disabled-gate observations and profile settings.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the root cause, solution, implementation details, and test results. It does not provide explicit test setup, browser conformance, or reviewer information, but these omissions are non-critical for this backend change.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds one test title at pkg/console/configobservation/apiserver/observe_tlssecurityprofile_test.go:177: omits tlsGroups when the feature gate is disabled. The other test titles in the changed test file are static strings or static table-case names. No title contains pod names, timestamps, random identifiers, node or namespace names, IP addresses, or legacy metadata tokens.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

PASS. The pull request adds standard Go testing subtests, not Ginkgo It blocks. The new test checks one related observer contract: disabling TLSGroupPreferences omits tlsGroups while retaining minTLSVersion. It creates only in-memory listers, uses no cluster operations or waits, and includes diagnostic assertion messages. The Informing() recommendation does not apply.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds only a standard Go unit test in observe_tlssecurityprofile_test.go. It does not add Ginkgo e2e tests or use Describe, Context, When, or It. Therefore, the MicroShift API compatibility check is not applicable.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only console operator implementation and a standard Go unit test file. The added tests use testing.T and t.Run; no new Ginkgo e2e tests (It, Describe, Context, or When) were added. Therefore, the SNO multi-node compatibility check does not apply.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes TLS observation state and startup wiring only. The changed files add no anti-affinity, topology spread constraints, replica calculations, node selectors/affinity, tolerations, topology checks, or PDB settings. The PDB references in starter.go are unchanged context. Therefore, the pull request introduces no topology-dependent scheduling constraint.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

No OTE stdout contract violation is introduced. The pull request adds feature-gate and FIPS state reads and passes booleans into the observer; it adds no stdout writes, logging configuration changes, or suite setup code. The existing klog calls remain in observer/starter code and are unchanged. The repository’s main entrypoint is also unchanged.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds only a Go unit test update in observe_tlssecurityprofile_test.go. It uses Test... and t.Run, not new Ginkgo e2e constructs such as It, Describe, Context, or When. The added test uses in-memory API objects and makes no IPv4 assumption or external network connection.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

The pull request adds no MD5, SHA1, DES, RC4, 3DES, Blowfish, ECB, custom cryptography, or secret-comparison logic. Its crypto-related changes only pass startup FIPS state and filter TLS groups to secp256r1, secp384r1, and secp521r1 in observe_tlssecurityprofile.go:116-149 and tls_fips.go:10-66.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

The pull request changes only Go source and test files. The diff adds TLS feature-state plumbing and FIPS detection, with no container or Kubernetes manifest changes and no occurrences of privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation, or root security settings. No listed privilege condition is introduced.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

No sensitive-data logging is introduced. The pull request changes observer state and startup flag wiring, but adds no new production log call. Existing events log TLS profile values only: minTLSVersion, cipherSuites, and tlsGroups (observe_tlssecurityprofile.go:104-110), and the existing FIPS warning logs configured TLS groups (line 139). These values are not passwords, tokens, API keys, PII, session IDs, hostnames, or customer data.

Assert that disabled-gate observation preserves cipherSuites.

The Intermediate profile defines nonempty ciphers. The current test checks only minTLSVersion, so it would pass if the disabled-gate path stopped emitting cipherSuites.
