Implements the Console Operator side of the proxy support for the External OIDC
authentication stack as described in the enhancement proposal:
openshift/enhancements#2097

The feature is gated by ExternalOIDC and AuthenticationComponentProxyExternalOIDC
and only activates when authentication type is OIDC and a Console OIDC client is
configured.

Changes:

  • pkg/proxyconfig: new package with Config struct (HTTPProxy, HTTPSProxy, NoProxy,
TrustedCAName), Finalize() that appends implicit bypass defaults (.cluster.local,
.svc, localhost, 127.0.0.1, and their trailing-dot variants, plus
    KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST), ConsoleProxyResolver that reads Console.spec.authProxy
from the operator resource, and GatedProxyResolver that wraps a resolver behind
    a set of feature gates.

  • pkg/api: constants for the auth proxy CA ConfigMap name
    (v4-0-config-system-auth-proxy-ca), mount directory (/var/auth-proxy-ca), and
    key (ca-bundle.crt).

  • pkg/console/operator/auth_proxy.go: SyncAuthProxyTrustedCAConfigMap syncs the
trustedCA ConfigMap from openshift-config into openshift-console via the resource
syncer and blocks further reconciliation while the copy is pending.

  • pkg/console/subresource/consoleserver: adds AuthProxy struct (httpProxy,
httpsProxy, noProxy, trustedCAFilePath) to the Auth type and an AuthProxy()
builder method that populates it; the proxy block is emitted into console-config.yaml
    only when authType is "oidc".

  • pkg/console/subresource/deployment: mounts the auth proxy CA ConfigMap at
    /var/auth-proxy-ca when authProxy.TrustedCAName is set.

  • pkg/console/operator/sync_v400.go: resolves the auth proxy in the OIDC branch of
the sync loop, syncs its CA, passes the resolved config to the ConfigMap and
Deployment builders, and removes the synced ConfigMap on teardown.

  • pkg/console/starter/starter.go: wires a GatedProxyResolver behind ExternalOIDC
    and AuthenticationComponentProxyExternalOIDC gates into NewConsoleOperator.

  • examples/console-auth-proxy.yaml: example Console resource showing authProxy usage.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional HTTP and HTTPS proxy settings for Console’s external OIDC authentication, with no-proxy rules and trusted CA support.
    • Added an example configuration showing how to enable the authentication proxy and exclude an IDP host.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Updated proxy and trusted CA configuration when settings change, without triggering unnecessary Console restarts when CA contents are updated.
    • Cleared proxy settings when the feature is disabled or no longer configured.

Walkthrough

The change adds feature-gated External OIDC proxy resolution to Console Operator. The operator synchronizes an optional trusted CA, writes proxy settings to Console OIDC configuration, and mounts the CA in the Console Deployment.

Changes

External OIDC auth proxy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Proxy configuration and feature gates
pkg/proxyconfig/*, pkg/api/api.go, pkg/console/starter/*, go.mod
Adds the proxy configuration value and feature-gate callback. Finalization adds internal bypass entries and the Kubernetes service host, then sorts and deduplicates the list.
Proxy resolution and CA lifecycle
pkg/console/operator/auth_proxy*, pkg/console/operator/operator.go, pkg/console/operator/sync_v400*, pkg/console/starter/starter_test.go, docs/*
The operator resolves eligible proxy settings, registers and checks CA ConfigMap synchronization, reports sync status, and removes the destination CA during cleanup. Tests cover gate behavior, CA synchronization, status, management state, and rotation. Documentation describes the implementation and proposed shared APIs.
Console OIDC configuration
pkg/console/subresource/consoleserver/*, pkg/console/subresource/configmap/*
Generated Console configuration includes the proxy block for OIDC authentication. The ConfigMap merge removes previously managed auth.proxy data before applying the current value.
Trusted-CA Deployment mount
pkg/console/subresource/deployment/*, pkg/console/operator/auth_proxy_test.go
Deployment generation mounts the referenced CA ConfigMap read-only and tracks its name in annotations. Tests check that CA content or resource-version changes do not change the Pod template, while changing the reference does.
Configuration example
examples/console-auth-proxy.yaml
Adds a managed Console example with HTTPS proxy and no-proxy settings, plus a commented optional trusted-CA reference.

The configured External OIDC proxy may be ignored by the current Console image. If so, OIDC traffic would not be routed through the intended proxy. This draft is gated behind feature gates, but matching Console support must ship before the feature can work as intended.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds standard Go Test... functions only. The changed files contain no Ginkgo DSL calls such as It, Describe, Context, or When, and no dynamic test titles are introduced.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds and updates standard Go tests, not Ginkgo tests. The changed test files use testing.T and contain no github.com/onsi imports or Ginkgo DSL. Therefore the stated Ginkgo-specific requirements do not apply. The one polling test uses bounded contexts and wait.PollUntilContextTimeout.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

The pull request adds or updates only Go unit tests using the standard testing package. The changed-test inventory contains no Ginkgo e2e tests and no added It, Describe, Context, or When constructs. Therefore, the MicroShift API and feature compatibility check does not apply.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

No new Ginkgo e2e tests were added. All added or modified tests use Go's standard testing package with Test... functions, including pkg/console/operator/auth_proxy_test.go:60, pkg/console/starter/starter_test.go:29, pkg/console/subresource/configmap/auth_proxy_test.go:15, pkg/console/subresource/deployment/auth_proxy_test.go:16, and pkg/proxyconfig/config_test.go:8. Therefore, the SNO multi-node assumption check does not apply.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

No topology-sensitive scheduling constraint is introduced. The deployment changes add only an optional read-only ConfigMap volume and source annotations for the auth-proxy CA (pkg/console/subresource/deployment/deployment.go:109-122, 287-299, 611-618). The added operator wiring passes proxy configuration to deployment generation but does not add node selectors, affinity, topology spread, tolerations, replica-count logic, or PDBs. Existing replica, anti-affinity, and rolling-update logic remains topology-aware and unchanged (deployment.go:145-210).

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

No OTE stdout-contract violation is introduced. The reviewed diff adds proxy configuration, synchronization, and feature-gate wiring, but no added fmt.Print*, log.Print*, klog output, os.Stdout, suite setup, TestMain, or init code. The only direct fmt.Printf found in a changed file is existing test diagnostic code inside a test function, which is outside the flagged process-level scope.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds standard Go unit tests, not new Ginkgo e2e tests. The added test files use testing.T and Test... functions, and the changed test files contain no Ginkgo imports or It, Describe, Context, or When declarations. The IPv4 test values such as 127.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.1 occur in unit-test fixtures, so this check does not apply.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds proxy configuration and CA synchronization, but it does not add MD5, SHA-1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, or ECB usage. It also adds no custom cryptography or secret/token comparisons. The existing crypto/sha256 import in deployment.go is unchanged by the diff.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

The pull request does not introduce privileged containers, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation, or root execution. The changed deployment code adds only an optional read-only ConfigMap volume, annotations, and proxy configuration. The example manifest contains no privilege-related fields.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The pull request makes sensitive proxy data reachable from an existing raw configuration log. SyncConfigMap logs the complete cm.Data at pkg/console/operator/sync_v400.go:540-542. The changed path adds auth.proxy through DefaultConfigMap (pkg/console/subresource/configmap/configmap.go:104-137), and AuthProxy copies user-provided proxy URLs and NoProxy entries (pkg/console/subresource/consoleserver/config_builder.go:248-255). These values can contain proxy credentials and internal or customer-specific hostnames.

Resolution

Remove the raw cm.Data log, or replace it with an allowlisted, sanitized summary. Do not log proxy URLs, credentials, NoProxy entries, or other user-controlled configuration values.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 6.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 45 functions across 24 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description provides a detailed solution summary, but it does not follow the required template. It omits the Analysis / Root cause, Test setup, Test cases, Browser conformance, Additional info, and Reviewers and assignees sections.

Resolution

Add all required template sections. Describe the analysis or root cause, test setup, test cases, browser conformance selections, additional information, and reviewers or assignees. Keep the existing solution details under Solution description.

  • pkg/serverconfig/types.go:16-18 explicitly says these structs are copied from the console operator and must remain in sync. Its Auth struct (:88-100) has no Proxy field or AuthProxy type, while this PR adds both to the operator’s canonical config types. The console’s typed config therefore does not expose the new auth.proxy settings. [::openshift/console::]
  • pkg/serverconfig/config.go:145 unmarshals the server config into that Config type, so this contract mismatch is on the config-loading path. [::openshift/console::]

  • pkg/serverconfig/types.go:16-18,88-100 says its configuration structs are copied from the console operator and must remain in sync. The console’s Auth type has no Proxy field or AuthProxy type, unlike the operator changes described in the PR. pkg/serverconfig/config.go:138-150 unmarshals the ConsoleConfig file into this typed config, and searches found no AuthProxy or auth.proxy references under pkg. The downstream console therefore has no corresponding typed configuration or implementation for the new proxy settings. [::openshift/console::]

90-108: The Console operand still has no handler for auth.proxy.

A previous review already reported this. The linked openshift/console serverconfig.Auth type has no Proxy field. Because of that, the proxy settings the operator writes are ignored at runtime.

Pair the proxy configuration with Console support.

When this operator renders auth.proxy, the linked openshift/console implementation does not consume that field. Its OIDC transport still uses http.ProxyFromEnvironment, so the configured component-specific proxy does not affect OIDC requests. Add the corresponding Console configuration and transport support, and ensure the deployed Console image contains those changes.

THanks @tchap 👍 PR looks good. Adding a few comments.

Also is restricting this feature to DevPreviewNoUpgrade intentional?
The enhancement describes enabling it through TechPreviewNoUpgrade, but the vendored API registers AuthenticationComponentProxyExternalOIDC only for DevPreviewNoUpgrade. Correspondingly, the generated Tech Preview Console CRD does not expose spec.authProxy.

We should prevent credentials embedded in auth proxy URLs from reaching operator logs. The new proxy URLs are serialized into console-config.yaml. That configuration then reaches two existing logging paths:

A URL such as http://user:password@proxy.example.com:3128 can therefore expose its credentials in logs.

Pls ensure URL userinfo is redacted.

I am adding a12d9b9 for now, but it seems the other problem is generic and is in library-go... 😐 You are obviously not supposed to put secret data in ConfigMaps... This is TBH a generic problem with any proxy config on the cluster currently. The credentials are not hard to leak. So I am not sure it makes that much sense to spend time on this currently.

// We block further sync/deployment when the ConfigMap is not yet in place.
// This is because Console required the volume and actually loads the bundle initially on startup,
// then starts watching it. This is consistent with what other operators/operands do.

I think we should verify the content here by at least verifying if the required key ca-bundle.crt is in the CM?

Could we check the proxy CA prerequisites before publishing the new Console configuration?

When adding authProxy.trustedCA for the first time, SyncConfigMap updates the shared Console ConfigMap to reference /var/auth-proxy-ca/ca-bundle.crt. Only afterwards does SyncAuthProxyTrustedCAConfigMap check whether the CA copy exists.

If that copy is pending or missing, reconciliation returns before SyncDeployment adds the CA volume. Existing Pods therefore retain their old volume mounts while their projected Console configuration can already reference the new file. A Console container restarting in one of those Pods cannot load the referenced CA.

With a missing source ConfigMap, this inconsistent state can persist indefinitely.

Please preserve the existing Console configuration while waiting for the CA prerequisite, and add a reconciliation test covering this case. The transition also needs to account for existing Pods consuming the shared ConfigMap before the new volume mounts have rolled out.

Implements the Console Operator side of the proxy support for the External OIDC
authentication stack as described in the enhancement proposal:
openshift/enhancements#2097

The feature is gated by ExternalOIDC and AuthenticationComponentProxyExternalOIDC
and only activates when authentication type is OIDC and a Console OIDC client is
configured.

Changes:

- pkg/proxyconfig: new package with Config struct (HTTPProxy, HTTPSProxy, NoProxy,
TrustedCAName), Finalize() that appends implicit bypass defaults (.cluster.local,
.svc, localhost, 127.0.0.1, and their trailing-dot variants, plus
  KUBERNETES_SERVICE_HOST), ConsoleProxyResolver that reads Console.spec.authProxy
from the operator resource, and GatedProxyResolver that wraps a resolver behind
  a set of feature gates.

- pkg/api: constants for the auth proxy CA ConfigMap name
  (v4-0-config-system-auth-proxy-ca), mount directory (/var/auth-proxy-ca), and
  key (ca-bundle.crt).

- pkg/console/operator/auth_proxy.go: SyncAuthProxyTrustedCAConfigMap syncs the
trustedCA ConfigMap from openshift-config into openshift-console via the resource
syncer and blocks further reconciliation while the copy is pending.

- pkg/console/subresource/consoleserver: adds AuthProxy struct (httpProxy,
httpsProxy, noProxy, trustedCAFilePath) to the Auth type and an AuthProxy()
builder method that populates it; the proxy block is emitted into console-config.yaml
  only when authType is "oidc".

- pkg/console/subresource/deployment: mounts the auth proxy CA ConfigMap at
  /var/auth-proxy-ca when authProxy.TrustedCAName is set.

- pkg/console/operator/sync_v400.go: resolves the auth proxy in the OIDC branch of
the sync loop, syncs its CA, passes the resolved config to the ConfigMap and
Deployment builders, and removes the synced ConfigMap on teardown.

- pkg/console/starter/starter.go: wires a GatedProxyResolver behind ExternalOIDC
  and AuthenticationComponentProxyExternalOIDC gates into NewConsoleOperator.

- examples/console-auth-proxy.yaml: example Console resource showing authProxy usage.

Reorder SyncAuthProxyTrustedCAConfigMap to execute before
SyncConfigMap so the proxied auth CA copy exists before publishing
console configuration that references it. This prevents referencing
CA files that don't exist yet in pod volumes. Add test coverage for
auth proxy CA sync, including cases that verify sync waits for the
CA copy before publishing config, then publishes both the config map
and deployment once the CA is present.
