Problem

When lexing Aqua registry templates in crates/aqua-registry/src/template.rs, a string literal that begins with " but lacks an unescaped closing quote causes lex() to spin indefinitely in its while !code.is_empty() loop because code is never advanced.

Additionally, checking code.chars().nth(end) != Some('\\') indexed into character positions rather than byte offsets from match_indices, and did not account for escaped backslashes preceding the quote (e.g. \\" vs \").

Fix

  • Ensure lex() bails with "unterminated string literal" when no matching unescaped closing quote is found instead of spinning indefinitely.
  • Accurately count preceding backslashes byte-wise to determine quote escaping.
  • Add regression test test_render_unterminated_string_fails in crates/aqua-registry/src/template/tests.rs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of escaped quotation marks and backslashes in template strings.
    • Closing quotes are now identified correctly, including after multiple backslashes.
    • Unterminated string literals now return a clear error instead of being parsed incorrectly.
    • Unicode and escaped characters are preserved correctly during template processing.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for unterminated strings, Unicode content, escaped quotes, and backslash combinations.

Vulnerability identified by BudgetScan static analysis.

📝 Walkthrough

The template string lexer now handles escaped quotes and backslash parity. It reports unterminated string literal when no valid closing quote exists. Tests cover lexing and rendering behavior.

Prevent an infinite loop in the template lexer when a string literal
lacks an unescaped closing quote. Also properly account for backslash
escaping when identifying terminating quotes.

Assert the unterminated-string diagnostic.

These is_err() checks pass if the lexer returns a different error. The PR promises unterminated string literal. Compare the error text in the rendering test and each unterminated-string lexer case so the tests detect a diagnostic regression. Based on learnings, exact assertions in Rust tests catch output changes that loose checks miss.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle empty string literals without an invalid range.

When the input starts with "", the quote scan returns end == 0. The inclusive slice code[1..=end] then indexes 1..=0 and panics before emitting Token::String(""). Use an exclusive upper bound so empty and non-empty string contents are sliced correctly.

Suggested fix
-                    tokens.push(Token::String(&code[1..=end]));
+                    tokens.push(Token::String(&code[1..end + 1]));

Update the string token construction in the quote-scanning loop to use an
