Config that refers to the built-in Homebrew prefix had to hard-code it per platform (/opt/homebrew on macOS, /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew on Linux), usually with a platform-specific config file just to set a var. Templates can now use {{ system_brew_prefix }}, available everywhere templates are, like xdg_config_home:

[env]
PKG_CONFIG_PATH = "{{ system_brew_prefix }}/opt/mysql-client/lib/pkgconfig"

On Linux mise env exports /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew/opt/mysql-client/lib/pkgconfig; on Apple Silicon it exports the /opt/homebrew path. The value is exactly the prefix mise bootstrap installs brew packages into, including the undocumented MISE_SYSTEM_BREW_PREFIX override: the resolution now lives in one mise_util::env::system_brew_prefix() shared by the brew code and the template context.

Combined with #14570 (templated bootstrap.user.login_shell), login_shell = "{{ system_brew_prefix }}/bin/zsh" works. This is the second half of #14568. It does not detect an existing Homebrew install elsewhere (e.g. Intel /usr/local); it reports mise's own prefix.

Validated with the new e2e/cli/test_system_brew_prefix_template and clippy. Local hk cargo-check fails on an unrelated Cargo.toml manifest lint, so the commit skipped the hook.

Note

Low Risk
Additive template variable and shared prefix helper; task output rendering change is limited to including standard template context alongside dependency env.

Overview
Adds {{ system_brew_prefix }} so config can reference mise’s built-in Homebrew install prefix without hard-coding /opt/homebrew vs /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew.

Prefix resolution moves into shared mise_util::env::system_brew_prefix() (platform defaults plus MISE_SYSTEM_BREW_PREFIX), used by the brew bootstrap code and every template context (BASE_CONTEXT, .miserc.toml, settings age paths). Docs describe the variable; new e2e checks default paths and the override.

Task output path re-rendering now clones BASE_CONTEXT instead of a bare Tera context, so globals like system_brew_prefix still resolve when outputs are re-rendered with dependency env (covered in test_task_dep_env_outputs).

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a shared system Homebrew prefix resolver. Built-in Homebrew support and template contexts use the resolved value. Task-output rerendering uses the shared template context. Documentation and end-to-end tests cover template use, platform defaults, and the environment override.

Changes: System Homebrew prefix

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and reuse the system prefix
crates/mise-util/src/env.rs, src/system/packages/brew/prefix.rs
system_brew_prefix() returns a non-empty MISE_SYSTEM_BREW_PREFIX value or a platform default. Built-in Homebrew support now uses this function.

Template contexts provide system_brew_prefix, and task-output rerendering uses the shared base context. End-to-end tests check template output, defaults, and the override. Documentation describes the variable and shows its use.

The new task-output test may pass even when its declared output was not created, leaving this behavior vulnerable to regressions. This is a bounded test-confidence issue, not evidence of a current production failure.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no blocking issues remain.

Summary

Adds system_brew_prefix to templates and shares its lookup with Homebrew package installation.

  • Templates can use the prefix for mise’s built-in Homebrew support.

Both earlier, unnumbered findings are fixed: early config contexts now include the value, and dependency output re-rendering retains shared template values. No new actionable issues were found.

Add coverage for the independent template contexts.

The test covers only the shared mise.toml context. Add focused assertions for .miserc.toml and settings age-path rendering. A later removal of either independent system_brew_prefix insertion would otherwise pass the current test.

Assert the rendered output path in Test 3.

Test 3 is intended to protect shared template values during dependency-output rerendering, but assert_succeed checks only the exit status. A bad rerender can leave the declared output missing because save_checksum logs a warning and the task still succeeds. Test 2 checks only env.BUILD_DIR.

Update Test 3’s [tasks.build] command to create the file at the path rendered by

checking only that mise run deploy succeeds does not verify the

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

7b2aaa1cf457 vs 8eff5d17fa01 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
