…flow move (#14338) <!-- entire-trail-link-start --> https://entire.io/gh/jdx/mise/trails/663 <!-- entire-trail-link-end --> A machine that installed aube 2.2–2.5 could not upgrade it. aube moved its signing workflow from `release-plz.yml` to `release.yml` at 2.6.0. mise's signer pin remembered the first one, so `mise upgrade` and `latest` resolution refused every newer release. This happened even though the registry entry's `workflow` list (#14092) names both workflows: ``` $ mise upgrade mise WARN Error getting latest version for aube: packslip:github.com/aubepkg/aube: this release is signed by https://github.com/aubepkg/aube/.github/workflows/release.yml (sigstore-oidc), but https://github.com/aubepkg/aube/.github/workflows/release-plz.yml (sigstore-oidc) signed what mise accepted before. mise All tools are up to date ``` A `workflow` list is the explicit trust decision the signer pin waits for. The pin now accepts a release when both the pinned signer and the release's signer are among the listed workflows, and records the new one. The same machine now upgrades without `mise packslip forget`: ``` $ mise upgrade Upgraded 1 tool: aube 2.5.1 → 2.7.0 ``` This applies to a list in the user's own tool options as well as a registry default: ```toml [tools] "packslip:github.com/example/tool" = { version = "latest", workflow = ["release-plz.yml", "release.yml"] } ``` A single `workflow`, or a list that doesn't name the pinned signer, still refuses a new signer as before. Reported in discussion #13948. ### Validation - New unit test in `packslip_pins.rs`: the move is refused without the list, accepted and recorded with it, and still refused when only one side is listed. - Ran a debug build against isolated state: installed aube 2.5.1, which pinned `release-plz.yml`. Then `mise upgrade` installed 2.7.0 and moved the pin to `release.yml`, and reinstalling 2.5.1 moved it back. With `workflow = "release.yml@refs/heads/main"` alone, 2.7.0 is still refused against the old pin. - `cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings` is clean, and the packslip unit tests pass. *AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: 2.1.295.* 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) <!-- CURSOR_SUMMARY --> --- > [!NOTE] > **Medium Risk** > Changes packslip trust and pin persistence logic; scope is limited to workflow-list continuity with existing refusal paths for unrelated signers. > > **Overview** > Fixes upgrades that failed when a vendor moved its signing workflow (e.g. `release-plz.yml` → `release.yml`) even though the tool’s **`workflow`** list already trusted both paths. > > **Signer pin continuity** now treats a multi-workflow **`workflow`** option as an explicit trust decision: if both the stored pin and the release’s signer appear in that list, the release is accepted and the pin is updated to the current workflow—no **`mise packslip forget`**. Packslip registry defaults accept a release signed by any workflow of the vendor's repository. This pins each tool to the workflow, and ref, that actually signs its releases, so a signature from another workflow or ref is rejected for
mise use hkand the other shorthands.Stacked on #14093 (a list of workflows, and a ref on an entry), which sits on #14091 (a user's own signer options replace these defaults). Worktrunk is handled by #14073.
workflow = "release.yaml"workflow = "releaser.yaml"workflow = "release.yml"workflow = "publish-cli.yml"workflow = "release.yml@refs/heads/main"workflow = ["release-plz.yml@refs/heads/main", "release.yml@refs/heads/main"]communique, mr-boxington, pitchfork and aube sign from
main, not from a tag, so their entries name the ref. For them the protection is only as strong asmain's branch protection. aube's releases 2.2.11–2.5.1 were signed byrelease-plz.ymland 2.6.0 onward byrelease.yml, hence the list.Verified against every release at or above each entry's
min_version: I read the certificate identity in eachpackslip.sigstore.jsonand it matches the pin. I also built this branch and installed themin_versionand latest release of every pinned tool, and aube 2.2.11, 2.5.1, 2.6.0 and 2.7.0, with isolated data and state dirs. All succeeded in a fresh dir.Known limit: packslip's existing signer continuity still applies on top. A machine that has installed aube 2.7.0 and then installs 2.2.11 (or the reverse) is refused because the signing workflow path changed, and has to run
mise packslip forget github.com/aubepkg/aube. That happens without this PR too; the list only makes either era installable on its own.Tag-based pins are only as strong as the vendor's tag protection (anyone who can push a tag can run a modified workflow). They still reject other workflows and branch or PR runs, so they are no weaker than the repository-wide default.

Note
Medium Risk
Changes packslip trust defaults and lockfile/option layering across backends; incorrect stripping could break installs or weaken workflow pinning, though unit and e2e tests cover the main cases.
Overview
Packslip registry entries for tools like hk, fnox, aube, and several others now default a
workflow(and sometimes a ref onmain) so installs only accept releases signed by that GitHub Actions workflow, not any workflow in the repo.Option resolution now records which backend supplied registry defaults (
apply_registry/registry_backend). When a lockfile or restore path binds a different backend than the registry’s packslip choice (e.g. lockedaqua:jdx/hkwhile the registry pins packslip’sworkflow), those registry options are dropped so they are not misread as aqua/github settings. Lockfile option matching uses the same rule.An e2e test confirms a user
pubkeyorworkflowstill replaces the registry pin (validation fails on the value, not “cannot be combined”), while settingworkflowandpubkeytogether remains an error.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit e140011. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
