fix(system): follow HTTP mirror redirects for checksum-pinned brew sources - #13611
Conversation
…urces ftpmirror.gnu.org, the source URL of every GNU formula, currently redirects to a plain-HTTP mirror, and mise refuses HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects on downloads, so building a GNU formula from source failed. Source tarballs are pinned by sha256, so follow the redirect through a dedicated client that is only reachable via a helper that verifies the checksum and removes the file on mismatch. Building a GNU formula from source with the brew system package manager failed because GNU's mirror redirector is currently sending requests to a plain-HTTP mirror:
Since #13292, mise refuses HTTPS→HTTP redirects on downloads, so
mise bootstrap packages applystopped with:Homebrew follows these redirects. Every formula source tarball is pinned by sha256, so downgrading the transport doesn't weaken the result. With this change, brew source downloads follow the redirect, the build completes, and a tarball that doesn't match the checksum is still rejected.
This failure is also what broke
cli/test_system_install_brew_source_slowon the 2026.9.14 release PR (#13590).Implementation
http::download_file_checksum_pinned(url, path, sha256, pr). It uses a private client whose redirect policy allows the downgrade, and it removes the file if the checksum doesn't match. That private client is the only one that allows the downgrade, and it can only be reached through this helper. Every other client keeps refusing it.brew::source::fetch_sourcenow calls this helper instead ofHTTP.download_filefollowed byensure_checksum.Validation
TEST_ALL=1 mise run test:e2e cli/test_system_install_brew_source_slowpasses locally. At the time of the run, ftpmirror.gnu.org was redirecting to HTTP, so the test exercised the downgrade path.cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warningsis clean.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: unavailable.

Note
Medium Risk
Narrows the HTTPS→HTTP exception to one unix-only, SHA256-pinned code path; wrong wiring could weaken download security elsewhere, but scope is intentionally tight.
Overview
Fixes brew source builds failing when GNU mirrors (e.g.
ftpmirror.gnu.org) redirect from HTTPS to plain HTTP—a case the default HTTP client has refused since the HTTPS→HTTP redirect policy landed.Adds a Unix-only, checksum-gated download path:
download_file_checksum_pinneduses a dedicated client (HTTP_CHECKSUM_PINNED) that may follow those redirects, verifies SHA256 after download, and deletes the file if verification fails. All other HTTP clients still refuse transport downgrades. Homebrew formula source fetching now uses this helper instead ofHTTP.download_fileplus a separate checksum step.Includes a unit test for successful retention vs. mismatch cleanup.
