Reviewers can copy one command from the preview comment to download the correct build into their current directory as ./code-rules. It makes the file executable, replaces an existing binary after a successful download, and prints Downloaded and wrote ./code-rules.

The installer lives in _tools/install-preview.sh, with direct tests for macOS and Linux on ARM and Intel/AMD. The copyable command downloads that script using an authenticated GitHub CLI and runs it only after the complete download succeeds. Automated comments pin the script to the trusted default-branch workflow commit, independently of the PR build being installed.

Failed downloads preserve the old binary. Existing directories receive a clear error with the full path and guidance to use another directory. The installer never runs the downloaded binary. Direct download links, preview warnings, approval gates, and expiration details remain in the comment.

Validation:

  • Ran the exact sample command against GitHub in a temporary directory, replacing a dummy binary. Verified executable permissions, raw Mach-O format, cleanup, and SHA-256 against artifact metadata.
  • Tested the shell script directly in sh and bash across all four platforms, including fresh install, overwrite, partial and empty downloads, directories, symlinks, and unsupported platforms.
  • Tested the generated command's pinned script download, including empty and interrupted downloads that must not execute anything.
  • bun run check: formatting, lint, typecheck, 71 tests, docs check/build, and links passed.
  • Actionlint, shell syntax, and git diff --check passed.
  • Autoreview (--mode local, Codex) found no actionable issues.

Preview installation is a developer review convenience. Public installation and status pages no longer describe preview downloads or candidate packaging.

The template takes effect for new preview comments after merge. The manually posted sample uses this PR's reviewed installer commit and a previously completed preview build.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a one-line installer command for preview builds that automatically selects the correct platform binary.
    • Preview installers download files securely, verify successful downloads, preserve existing directories, and replace existing binaries only after completion.
    • Installation now creates an executable ./code-rules file in the current directory.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the installation guide with the new preview installer workflow and clarified available manual installation alternatives.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR adds a platform-aware preview installer, pins the installer to the trusted workflow commit, updates the generated preview comment, adds integration coverage, and documents the new installation command.

Changes

Preview installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform-aware installer
_tools/install-preview.sh, _tools/install-preview.test.ts
The installer selects an artifact from uname -sm, downloads it to a temporary file, validates it, and atomically installs ./code-rules. Tests cover supported platforms, shells, failures, permissions, symlinks, and cleanup.
Pinned preview command
.github/workflows/comment-binary-preview.yml, _tools/comment-binary-preview.test.ts
The workflow validates GITHUB_WORKFLOW_SHA and generates a command that downloads and runs the pinned installer. Tests reject unpinned commits and validate the generated command and failure behavior.
Installation guide update
docs/src/content/docs/guides/install.md
The guide describes the installer command, replacement behavior, authentication requirement, and direct-download alternative.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ccc94

The new one-line installation command produces an unusable preview binary, although the documented direct-download fallback remains available.

Sample using the reviewed installer from this PR and the earlier completed preview build below. You can copy and try the command. After merge, automated comments will pin the installer to the trusted default-branch workflow commit.

Manual testing is optional. With GitHub CLI installed and signed in (gh auth login), copy this line to install the build for your computer in the current directory. It replaces any existing ./code-rules after a successful download:

(set -eu; installer=$(mktemp); trap 'rm -f "$installer"' EXIT; gh api --hostname github.com -H 'Accept: application/vnd.github.raw+json' '/repos/fabricahq/code-rules/contents/_tools/install-preview.sh?ref=ccc9445759cac0b4667b4c2b0e368408461e4a2b' > "$installer"; test -s "$installer"; sh "$installer" github.com fabricahq/code-rules 10710692262 10710682197 10710812044 10710836922)

Then run ./code-rules --help. No extraction or global installation needed.
