This is a segfault, it is unlike related to the SHA-3 output, that's just the console log indicating the platform does not support SHA-3. I updated the error message and will see if I can figure out the source of the fault.

This is the native stack
Copilot believes this to be an issue with the interpreter GC
I don't see anything indicating that this is related to cryptography's code itself as the actual crash fairly far away from it.

Timeline:
System.Security.Cryptography.Tests.Affected configuration: Confirmed on
net11.0-osx-Release-arm64-interpmode1-OSX.26.Arm64.Openinruntime-libraries-interpreter. It can affect arbitrary test assemblies because the failure occurs while the interpreter reports GC roots, not in cryptography itself. Most likely culprit: PR #128384, Compile runtime async versions of synchronous task-returning methods. In controlled local reproduction attempts on macOS ARM64:
a438371dpassed 13/13 local runs.b426fdfcrashed on local run 6 with the exact reported stack:MethodTable::Validate -> ReportStackSlotToGC -> EnumerateLiveSlots -> InterpreterCodeManager::EnumGcRefs.The PR changed interpreter runtime-async call, return, suspension, stack-liveness, and GC-map handling. The evidence indicates incorrect GC metadata or representation of a shared-generic argument slot. Later candidates #129442 and #129474 were ruled out because local clean-build reproduction attempts on commits predating them still crashed.

This investigation summary was generated with GitHub Copilot.

The most likely PR which caused this is #128384, so adding both @jakobbotsch and @BrzVlad. We should fix this for 11.
BrzVlad commentedon Jul 15, 2026
I tried to reproduce locally but failed. Also the last few builds on the interpreter are green and I remember this suite was crashing with every run at some point. I'm wondering if this was somehow fixed recently.
The filter for this issue is too broad, so the matches are unrelated to the interpreter.
BrzVlad commentedon Jul 22, 2026
Closing this as it hasn't reproduced since and this issue matches on random crashes from other pipelines, unrelated to interpreter. Will keep an eye open for random crashes in interpreter library pipeline, which I believe still happen occasionally.
JulieLeeMSFT commentedon Jul 22, 2026
It failed with the same exit code 139 in the interpreter pipeline. Different test name, but maybe the same rootcause. CC @jakobbotsch, @vitek-karas, @BrzVlad.
