fix(ssh): support tilde private-key paths in Git SSH signing relay - #1732
Default Git SSH commit signing forwarding fails when the host configures user.signingkey with a ~/ (or ~user/) OpenSSH private-key path without an ssh-agent, especially when shared dotfiles put the same key and config in the Linux workspace.
The host must expand its own signing-key path before sending Git configuration to the workspace. The relay forwards only public-key data, preserves private-key bytes on the host, and uses the configured host key only when the request identifies that key; a missing workspace override now fails instead of silently signing with the default identity. Git SSH signing requests are restricted to the git namespace.
The change also safely quotes SSH signing-key values written to .gitconfig.
When the workspace sends no public key, the host signs with its configured key only if the workspace asked for that same key. A different or unreadable workspace key fails instead of signing with the host identity. Cancelling a signing request stops ssh-keygen.
Spec: should sign commits via default relay using a tilde private key without ssh-agent
Run with: mise run cli:test:e2e:focus 'tilde private key without ssh-agent'
Changed-package unit tests: mise exec -- go test ./pkg/gitsshsigning ./pkg/credentials ./pkg/tunnel ./pkg/agent/tunnelserver
mise run cli:lint:ci
Current GitHub CI on head da159753f9369dd5067b2cece5d42cd15ed1e59a: required checks, all unit-test matrices, lint, pre-commit, and CLI build jobs pass.
mise run cli:test passed locally: the full CLI unit tier was attempted and failed in tests outside the changed packages (hack/sign_commit, pkg/agent/delivery, pkg/docker, pkg/driver/docker, pkg/driver/external, pkg/driver/microsandbox, and pkg/ghcredentials).
How I verified it manually:
The focused E2E ran on macOS ARM64 against a Linux Docker container with SSH_AUTH_SOCK empty and the host private key configured via ~/.ssh/git_signing_ed25519. Both the default host relay and workspace-local ~/.ssh override produced valid Git signatures:
[master (root-commit) c0739dc] signed via default tilde relay
Good "git" signature for test@example.com with ED25519 key SHA256:6TKUeLpGVTULqWyiPec6e6RlI/SAwyYxVJOTekV/iqE
[master b0d0ffb] signed via workspace tilde override
Good "git" signature for test@example.com with ED25519 key SHA256:6TKUeLpGVTULqWyiPec6e6RlI/SAwyYxVJOTekV/iqE

New Features
Git SSH commit signing can use a configured host key, including when ssh-agent is unavailable.
Signing-key paths support home-directory and working-directory resolution, with explicit key settings taking precedence over host Git configuration.
SSH signing requests support the Git signing namespace and can use public-key details from supported private-key files.
Bug Fixes
Git signing configuration safely handles special characters and whitespace in key values.
Private-key text is not included in relayed signing requests.
Documentation
Added guidance on commit signing, forwarding controls, supported key settings, and when workspace-selected keys may not be available for signing.

Walkthrough
The SSH signing relay resolves configured signing-key paths, includes namespace and public-key data in signing requests, and signs with a configured host key. Tests cover private-key signing without an SSH agent, host and workspace tilde-path configurations, and signature verification.
Changes: Git SSH signing relay
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve signing-key paths and pass the host key pkg/gitsshsigning/utils.go, pkg/gitsshsigning/utils_test.go, pkg/tunnel/services.go, pkg/tunnel/services_test.go, pkg/agent/tunnelserver/options.go, pkg/agent/tunnelserver/tunnelserver.go
SSH signing-key paths are expanded or resolved from Git configuration. Tunnel services pass the resolved key to the tunnel server and credentials command.
Requests include the signing namespace and public-key data extracted from private-key files or adjacent public-key files. Git configuration values are escaped when written.
Resolve and use the host signing key pkg/gitsshsigning/server.go, pkg/gitsshsigning/server_test.go, pkg/agent/tunnelserver/*, pkg/credentials/integration_test.go
The signing server resolves a matching host key or a temporary key file, then invokes ssh-keygen. Tunnel-server options provide the host key. Tests verify signatures without an SSH agent.
Verify host and workspace tilde-path signing e2e/tests/ssh/ssh.go, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-in-workspaces/credentials.mdx
The end-to-end test verifies commits signed through the default relay and a workspace tilde-path override. The documentation describes SSH commit signing configuration and key selection.

Explanation
The title names the main change: tilde (~/) private-key paths in the Git SSH signing relay. The changeset adds tilde expansion (ExpandSigningKeyPath, ResolveSigningKey), host-key signing without ssh-agent, and tests for those paths. The title follows Conventional Commits form with a scope, and it is short and specific.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1723 requires default Git SSH signing forwarding to work when the host user.signingkey is a ~/ OpenSSH private-key path and no ssh-agent is used. The reviewed head implements this path:
pkg/gitsshsigning/server.go: SignWithHostKey expands the host signing key with ExpandSigningKeyPath. With no public-key content, it uses the host key file only when the request KeyPath matches the configured host key or its expanded path. Otherwise it returns an error, so a missing override does not sign with the default identity. With public-key content, it prefers a host key file whose public key matches, and otherwise writes the public key to a temp file with a normalized trailing newline. This addresses the reported newline-corruption failure.
pkg/agent/tunnelserver/tunnelserver.go: GitSSHSignature calls SignWithHostKey(t.gitSSHSigningKey), so the host key is used on the relay side.
Per the summary, the workspace side extracts only the public key from the private key (key.go, client.go), and the host expands the path before it sends Git configuration (utils.go, pkg/tunnel/services.go). The private-key bytes stay on the host.
Tests: the E2E spec should sign commits via default relay using a tilde private key without ssh-agent (e2e/tests/ssh), unit tests in pkg/gitsshsigning/server_test.go (for example TestSign_HostTildePrivateKey_WithoutSSHAgent and TestSign_MissingWorkspaceOverrideDoesNotUseHostKey), pkg/agent/tunnelserver/tunnelserver_gitssh_test.go, and the credentials integration test in pkg/credentials/integration_test.go. The author also reports a manual run on macOS ARM64 with a Linux container.
I read the server.go, tunnelserver.go, and helper.go diffs. I did not re-run the tests. The verdict relies on the source diff, the summary for the other files, and the author's reported test results.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area supports the #1723 fix or its required tests:
Signing relay (server.go, tunnelserver.go, tunnelserver/options.go): adds the host signing key path and the WithGitSSHSigningKey option that the fix requires.
Key extraction and resolution (key.go, client.go, utils.go): reads public keys from private-key files and expands ~ and ~user paths on the host. These implement the requested behavior.
Namespace restriction (resolveSigningNamespace, Namespace field): limits requests to git. The PR description states this, and it is a bounded hardening of the same request path.
Config quoting (helper.go, formatGitConfigValue): quotes signing-key values written to .gitconfig. Expanded paths can contain backslashes, #, or ;, so this is connected to writing the expanded key. helper_test.go covers it.
pkg/tunnel/services.go: resolves the key once and passes it to the local tunnel server and the credentials command. This is required to deliver the host key to the relay.
Test changes: USERPROFILE, HOME, and XDG isolation, and shared test constants, support the new tests.
Removed test: the test that expected an empty public key to resolve to the request key path. Its removal follows from the new requirement that a missing override fails.
The author reports unrelated CLI unit-test failures in other packages. I did not verify these. They do not appear to be caused by the changed code, and they do not show out-of-scope changes.

Explanation
The description follows the required structure and provides the problem, issue reference, change type, AI-use details, testing results, manual verification, and checklist status. It does not explicitly complete the two AI attestation items about reviewing every line and verifying generated tests without the fix.

Test that a missing workspace override fails the commit instead of signing with the default key.
The second commit uses the same key file as the default commit. The allowed-signers file holds one entry, and git verify-commit checks only against that file. If the repo-local user.signingkey were ignored, the test would still pass. A fingerprint check would not separate the two cases either, because both paths use the same key.
A second key that exists only in the workspace cannot sign through the relay without an SSH agent. The host signs with its configured key only when the request public key matches that key. Otherwise it writes the public key to a temporary file and runs ssh-keygen -Y sign on that file. Adding the second public key to the allowed-signers file therefore does not make the override commit succeed in this test.
Suggested change: after the default commit, set a repo-local user.signingkey to a key that exists only in the workspace. Assert that git commit fails in the no-agent setup. If the override were ignored, the host would sign with the default key and the commit would succeed. This assertion would detect that fallback.

in the no-agent setup. This must distinguish honoring the override from silently
