Often we want to install Dev Container Features in containers that are not required for development but that we personally use.
For example, in my case it is the fish shell and shell-history.

VS Code Dev Containers supports similar functionality in its own configuration (dev.containers.defaultFeatures), but it would be great if the spec could support this like compose.override.yml of docker compose.

Bumping this as I'd like to see this idea implemented. ❤️
My usage would be to combine this for per-project overrides with user settings for global overrides (like dev.containers.defaultExtensions, dev.containers.defaultFeatures).

This would allow per-project overrides of environment variables and mount volumes as well as extensions and features.

Unlike dev.containers.repositoryConfigurationPaths, an override file would live in the project's directory and merge with the committed devcontainer config instead of replacing it, making it easier to manage and would inherit from project's updates.
