Why

Agents handed back open PRs without reading CI. A later turn then said there was nothing left to do while required checks were red. Handback now runs one status-only pass and reports that state. Babysit stays opt-in.

What changed

  • Opening a PR runs gh pr checks or watch-pr --status-only when you hand the PR back, reports red and pending checks, and fixes a failure the diff reproduces.

Scope

  • Covers the handback moment only.
  • Leaves the babysit loop for an explicit ask.
  • Leaves the separate pre-push policy step alone.

Blast Radius

Agents that follow Opening a PR spend one status query at handback and do not mark a change done while a required check is red or pending. watch-pr --status-only still exits 0, so the playbook tells them to read the printed state.

Verification

  • npm install --no-save ajv ajv-formats && node scripts/validate-plugins.mjs passed. All plugins validated successfully.
  • Read runSimple in the watch-pr policy. --status-only returns exit code 0 with the check rows in the printed verdict.

Handback used to post the URL with CI unknown, then a later turn called the work done while required checks were red.
Read the printed check state once. Fix a failure the diff reproduces.
Do not start a babysit for a pending check, a flake, or an infrastructure failure.
