[Feature Request] Add extension column and time display to file list #475

Open

Description

@Lentzeris

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
I'm always frustrated when working with file lists because I can't sort or identify files by their extension separately from the filename. The current "name" column combines both the filename and extension, which makes it difficult to quickly see file types at a glance or sort by extension. Additionally, the date column only shows the date without time information, making it hard to distinguish between files modified on the same day.

Describe the solution you'd like
I would like to see two improvements to the file panel columns:

  1. Separate Extension Column: Add an optional "extension" column that displays only the file extension (e.g., .js, .txt, .jpg). This would allow users to sort files by extension independently from the filename, similar to how Double Commander and other file managers handle this.

  2. Date Column with Time: Enhance the existing date column to include time information (e.g., 2026-09-01 14:30:25 or a configurable format). This would help identify which files were modified most recently within the same day.

Additional context
I'm running Cloud Commander in a Docker environment with latest version. The current column display is name-size-date. I'm aware that the columns system is somewhat customizable, but adding new columns appears to require modifying source code and rebuilding. These features would greatly improve the file management experience for developers and system administrators who frequently work with large numbers of files.

Example of the proposed column layout:

Name Extension Size Modified
README .md 2.1 KB 2026-09-01 14:30:25
package .json 1.4 KB 2026-09-01 13:15:10
index .js 8.7 KB 2026-08-31 09:45:03

This feature would be similar to the column customization options available in other file managers like Double Commander, Total Commander, and Dolphin.

    Hi Thank you, that’s good idea,
    name-size-time you already can use to show modification time, bu extension is missing.

    Do you up for a PR or sponsor feature with a donation?
    Here is list of places that must be improved:

    • readify
    • css new colons shape
    • cloudfunc to get additional info and process file names

    @coderaiser Thank you for your response and for considering the feature request.

    I wanted to share my current custom.css file that I've been using (after studying the original style displayed through the browser's developer tools) to achieve a layout closer to my preferences. It's an imperfect work-in-progress, but it might be useful as a reference or starting point if someone decides to implement something similar.

    /* Add a right border and consistent padding to all columns except the last */
    .fm-header .name,
    .fm-header .size,
    .fm-header .date,
    .fm-header .time,
    .files .name,
    .files .size,
    .files .date,
    .files .time {
        border-right: 1px solid rgba(100, 70, 40, 0.15) !important;
        padding-right: 8px !important;
        padding-left: 4px !important;
    }

    /* Remove border from the last column (time) - adjust if you have more columns */
    .fm-header .time,
    .files .time {
        border-right: none !important;
    }

    This CSS achieves several improvements:

    • Narrower size, date, and time columns
    • Proper alignment between header and file rows
    • Vertical separators between columns

    The main missing piece is still the separate extension column, which would be a great addition.

    Thanks again for maintaining such a great project.

    Looks interesting, can you show me screenshots: before and after your changes? I think if things really looks better and do not broke mobile view, and single panel view - we can merge them to main line, if it change look and feel can also add this as theme.

    The only consideration is if it will be merge (not theme), we need to get rid of important.

    Here are the requested screenshots showing the before and after states, plus one with me experimenting with different themes (background and font colors).

    1. Default (No Custom CSS)

    Image

    2. With Custom Column Widths & Separators

    Image

    3. Alternative Theme

    Image

    What the screenshots show:

    • Screenshot 1: Default Cloud Commander with name-size-date-time columns (via CLOUDCMD_COLUMNS=name-size-date-time environment variable)
    • Screenshot 2: Custom CSS applied with:
      • Narrower size, date, and time columns
      • Vertical separators between columns
      • The name column takes up remaining space
      • Proper alignment between header and file rows
    • Screenshot 3: The same column improvements applied to an alternative theme (different background and font colors)

    These changes are purely CSS-based and don't affect the underlying functionality. The !important flags are currently used because they're in a user custom.css file. For merging into the main codebase, these would be removed and the styles properly integrated.

    I like the way it looks, we can add two new themes, in a similar way light and dark added, the only thing they must have a names, and since they share same style, names must be similar, I think
