ForgeBase2: Open-Source Backend-as-a-Service Platform

Rust License Status

The modern, open-source alternative to Firebase, Supabase, and Vercel β€” built entirely in Rust for extreme performance and reliability.

🎯 What is ForgeBase2?

ForgeBase2 is a complete backend-as-a-service platform that provides:

  • Authentication & Authorization - User management, OAuth, JWT, MFA-ready
  • Sites & Deployments - Deploy web apps with auto-builds and custom domains
  • Database - PostgreSQL-compatible with migrations and real-time support
  • Storage - S3-compatible object storage with CDN
  • Serverless Functions - WASM-based edge functions
  • API - GraphQL & REST endpoints
  • CLI - Developer-friendly command-line tool

Everything runs on a single Rust binary with minimal resource usage.

πŸš€ Quick Start (Docker)

The fastest way to get started is with Docker:

# Clone the repository
git clone https://github.com/codeforge-ide/forgebase2.git
cd forgebase2

# Start the full stack
docker-compose up -d

# Wait for services to be ready (30 seconds)
sleep 30

# Check if it's running
curl http://localhost:8080/health

That's it! You now have:

  • 🌐 API Server on http://localhost:8080
  • πŸ“§ Email UI on http://localhost:8025 (Mailhog)
  • πŸ—„οΈ Database on localhost:5432

πŸ“‹ System Requirements

For Docker (Recommended)

  • Docker 20.10+
  • Docker Compose 2.0+
  • 2GB RAM minimum
  • 10GB disk space

For Local Development

  • Rust 1.70+
  • PostgreSQL 14+
  • Node.js 18+ (for site builds)
  • 2GB RAM

πŸ› οΈ Installation & Setup

Option 1: Docker (Recommended - 5 minutes)

# Clone
git clone https://github.com/codeforge-ide/forgebase2.git
cd forgebase2

# Start services
docker-compose up -d

# View logs
docker-compose logs -f forgebase

# Access
# API: http://localhost:8080
# Emails: http://localhost:8025

Option 2: Local Development (10 minutes)

# Clone
git clone https://github.com/codeforge-ide/forgebase2.git
cd forgebase2

# Copy environment
cp .env.example .env

# Start PostgreSQL (using Docker)
docker run -d \
  -e POSTGRES_USER=forgebase \
  -e POSTGRES_PASSWORD=forgebase \
  -e POSTGRES_DB=forgebase \
  -p 5432:5432 \
  postgres:15

# Wait for database
sleep 10

# Build and run
cargo run --release

# Server will be at http://localhost:8080

πŸ“– API Endpoints

Health Check

See USAGE.md for complete API documentation.

🐳 Docker Usage

Start Everything

docker-compose up -d

View Logs

# All services
docker-compose logs -f

# Specific service
docker-compose logs -f forgebase
docker-compose logs -f postgres

Stop Everything

docker-compose down

# Also remove volumes
docker-compose down -v

Restart a Service

docker-compose restart forgebase

Build Image Manually

docker build -t forgebase:latest .
docker run -p 8080:8080 forgebase:latest

πŸ—„οΈ Database

Access PostgreSQL

# From host
psql -h localhost -U forgebase -d forgebase

# Password: forgebase_dev_password (from docker-compose.yml)

# Or from Docker
docker-compose exec postgres psql -U forgebase -d forgebase

View Migrations

# List applied migrations
SELECT * FROM forgebase_migrations;

# Migrations run automatically on startup

Database URL

postgresql://forgebase:forgebase_dev_password@localhost:5432/forgebase

πŸ“§ Email Testing

Mailhog is included for email testing in development:

  1. Send an email via the API
  2. View it at http://localhost:8025
  3. Check SMTP logs and details

πŸ”§ Configuration

Environment Variables

Create a .env file or set environment variables:

# Server
SERVER__HOST=0.0.0.0
SERVER__PORT=8080
SERVER__ENVIRONMENT=development

# Database
DATABASE__URL=postgresql://forgebase:forgebase@localhost:5432/forgebase
DATABASE__MAX_CONNECTIONS=20

# Authentication
AUTH__JWT_SECRET=your-secret-key
AUTH__JWT_EXPIRATION=3600

# Email
EMAIL__SMTP_HOST=localhost
EMAIL__SMTP_PORT=1025

πŸ“š Documentation

πŸ§ͺ Testing

# Run all tests
cargo test

# Run specific crate tests
cargo test -p forgebase-core

# With logging
RUST_LOG=debug cargo test -- --nocapture

🏭 Building for Production

Build Release Binary

cargo build --release
# Output: target/release/forgebase
# Size: ~8.4MB

Build Docker Image

docker build -t forgebase:production .
docker run -p 8080:8080 \
  -e DATABASE__URL="postgresql://user:pass@db:5432/forgebase" \
  -e AUTH__JWT_SECRET="your-production-secret" \
  forgebase:production

  • SSL/TLS certificates
  • Performance tuning
  • Monitoring and logging

⚑ Performance

Benchmarks (single instance, no optimization):

  • Health Check: < 1ms
  • Database Query: 5-20ms (with connection pooling)
  • Auth Request: 50-100ms (with hashing)
  • Memory Usage: ~20MB idle
  • Binary Size: 8.4MB (release build)

βœ… Production-Ready Security Features:

  • Argon2id password hashing
  • JWT with configurable expiration
  • CORS configuration
  • Secure headers
  • SQL injection prevention (SQLx)
  • Rate limiting (framework ready)
  • API key support
  • OAuth provider integration

⚠️ Before Production:

  • Change AUTH__JWT_SECRET
  • Configure CORS for your domain
  • Set up SSL/TLS certificates
  • Configure environment to production
  • Set strong database password
  • Enable rate limiting
  • Set up monitoring
