[Bug]: Unable to update kernel unless existing one is wiped #905

Open

Description

@vsarunas

I have done the following

  • I have searched the existing issues
  • If possible, I've reproduced the issue using the 'main' branch of this project

Steps to reproduce

I tried to upgrade the kernel to try to see if a newer one works slightly better.
But setting does not make the kernel be downloaded on the next system start:

container system property set kernel.url https://github.com/kata-containers/kata-containers/releases/download/3.20.0/kata-static-3.20.0-arm64.tar.xz

Only after wiping Library/Application Support/com.apple.container/kernels the kernel was offered to be downloaded on start.

Current behavior

Old kernel is being used.

Expected behavior

Detect the new kernel option and download and extract it.

Environment

- OS:
- Xcode:
- Container: 0.6.0

Relevant log output

N/A

    Looks like need to run:

    container system kernel set --recommended

The current kernel management UX is a bit disjointed. Looks like you figured this out but we should keep this open to refer to as we study how to improve it.
