fix: Preserve selected trip instance in trip details - #652
This PR improves trip-detail consistency, live update handling, schedule-time presentation, and arrival-delay classification.
References [Bug: Trip Details Incorrect #330](#330). The original trip-selection symptom has not yet been independently reproduced and confirmed as resolved.
Changes
Trip identity: Preserve the selected trip instance using tripId and serviceDate.
Live status: Determine live versus previous-trip status using active-trip and vehicle identity information. An unavailable response vehicleId is not treated as proof of a previous trip.
Polling and stale responses: Preserve live polling while discarding outdated responses after the selected trip changes.
Error handling: Clear stale errors after a successful trip-details refresh.
Schedule time conversion: Convert scheduled stop times using the service date and agency timezone before displaying them in the user's local timezone.
Arrival-delay calculation: Calculate delays from the original predicted and scheduled timestamps.
Arrival-label behavior
Arrival labels now use the delay calculated from exact timestamp differences rather than comparing independently floored minute values.
This introduces some visible behavior changes across arrivals lists:
A prediction 45 seconds late now displays 1m late.
Some minute-boundary cases may receive a different classification.
A one-minute early prediction now uses red rather than the previous green styling.
Sub-minute differences that round to zero display On time, with matching on-time styling.
Testing
Added regression coverage for trip identity, stale responses, vehicle-ID classification, schedule-time conversion, and arrival-delay labels.
82 focused tests passed across the three relevant test suites in the latest reported validation.
npm run check passed with no errors or warnings.
ESLint, changed-file Prettier checks, and git diff --check passed.
The repository-wide Prettier stage reports existing formatting issues in unrelated files; those files are intentionally left unchanged.

resolveLiveState classifies trip status using active trip and vehicle identity. formatScheduleTimeFromSeconds resolves schedule seconds using the service date and schedule timezone, then formats the result in the browser timezone.
Load and render selected trip details src/components/oba/TripDetailsPane.svelte, src/components/stops/StopPane.svelte, src/routes/api/oba/trip-details/[tripId]/+server.js, src/locales/en.json
TripDetailsPane receives the selected vehicle and fetches details using the trip ID and optional service date. It ignores stale or mismatched responses and refreshes 30 seconds after a current request finishes. The API omits the time parameter and includes serviceDate when it is not null. The heading distinguishes live and previous trips.
Validate trip selection and refresh behavior src/components/oba/__tests__/TripDetailsPane.test.js, src/components/stops/__tests__/StopPane.test.js, src/tests/api/trip-details.test.js
Tests cover request identity, service-date handling, polling, cancellation, live-state display, schedule formatting, and arrival-specific component identity. The API test checks that time is omitted and serviceDate=0 is forwarded.

StopPane creates one TripDetailsPane for each arrival, but this test supplies only one arrival. A regression that reuses the first arrival's scheduledArrivalTime for every trip can pass this test. Add a second arrival with a distinct tripId and timestamp, then assert the non-first arrival's props.

Passing time=<scheduledArrivalTime> does not choose the trip instance. It moves the "now" used to compute the trip's real-time status to the rider's scheduled arrival time. The instance is already fixed by tripId + serviceDate, which this component has always sent. In the Java OBA server, BlockStatusServiceImpl.getBlockInstances returns the single block instance for (blockId, serviceDate) when serviceDate != 0 and ignores time. Maglev does the same in trip_details_handler.go. time is only used as TargetTime(time, time) when locating the vehicle. Because that also sets the current time, real-time records are only kept when they fall within _predictionCacheMaxOffset (5 minutes) of the requested time. So for any arrival more than about 5 minutes out, the server drops the live vehicle and falls back to the scheduled position at that future time. The "Live · vehicle" heading disappears and the bus marker (closestStop/nextStop → busPosition) jumps to roughly the rider's stop. The 30-second refresh then keeps sending the same frozen time. This regresses the live trip view and likely does not fix Bug: Trip Details Incorrect #330, whose cause is somewhere other than instance selection.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Thanks for working on #330. I traced how the server handles time, though, and it doesn't do what this PR assumes. As written, the change makes the live trip view worse:
time doesn't choose the trip instance.tripId + serviceDate already pin one instance. In the Java server, BlockStatusServiceImpl.getBlockInstances returns the single instance for (blockId, serviceDate) whenever serviceDate != 0 and ignores time. Maglev behaves the same way. StopPane already sends serviceDate.
time sets the server's "now" for live status. It becomes TargetTime(time, time) in computeLocations, and only live vehicle records within about 5 minutes of that time are kept. So for any arrival more than about 5 minutes out, the server drops the live vehicle and falls back to the schedule. The "Live · vehicle" heading disappears and the bus marker jumps to its scheduled position at the rider's stop time. The 30-second refresh keeps sending the same fixed time, so the view never moves forward.
So this probably doesn't fix #330, and it hurts the common case. Two more promising leads: pass arrival.vehicleId through, which tells apart vehicles sharing a block; and check whether #330 is a vehicle still running the previous trip on the same block, where status.activeTripId differs from tripId. The new tests only check that time= appears in the URL, so they'd pass either way. Ideally a test would cover the actual instance or vehicle the user picked.
I just glanced. I was unaware and unsure about these issues in my pr.
I went through everything you pointed and will fix it. I appreciate that you confronted with right requirements, and I will keep the faith in it to appropriately behave throughout project.
combined with the setInterval(loadTripDetails, 30000) at line 104 means every 30 s poll re-sends the same historical time=<tapped-ms>. Per the OBA trip-details-for-trip API, time is the moment the server computes status against — including closestStop and position, which calculateBusPosition() uses to place the bus marker. Result: the vehicle marker is pinned to the tapped moment and never advances with the real bus, defeating the purpose of the periodic refresh.
Suggested fix: send time only on the initial fetch (to disambiguate the trip instance), then drop it from subsequent polls. Something like:
Important — 0 timestamp falls back to the pre-fix bug
Same line, if (scheduledArrivalTime) is falsy for 0. OBA uses 0 as a "no scheduled time" sentinel for some realtime-only arrivals; those will omit &time= entirely and resolve against wall-clock time — exactly what #330 was supposed to fix. Should be if (scheduledArrivalTime != null).
Nits
The JSDoc and inline comment say "scheduled departure the rider tapped," but the prop/field is scheduledArrivalTime. For layover stops where arrival ≠ departure this matters — pick one and align docs with the field name.
No $effect ties scheduledArrivalTime → loadTripDetails. If the prop ever reactively updates while the component instance is reused, the setInterval keeps using the first-captured value. Low likelihood in current flows but worth a comment at minimum.
src/components/stops/__tests__/StopPane.test.js removed the SingleSelectAccordion mock, so the real component now mounts in every test and runs its $effect / handleAccordionSelectionChanged. This leaks context across unrelated tests (survey-banner, layover, 500-error). Also the AccordionItem mock overwrites tripDetailsPaneMock.props on each child render — the new assertion only works because the current fixture has one arrival; a future fixture with two rows would silently measure only the last.
Happy to re-review once the blocking + important items are addressed.
Remove the scheduled-time query that can pin status lookups, validate the selected trip identity, and retain live polling. Format scheduled service-day times in the browser timezone.

Live predictions that are a few seconds off schedule now show "0 min late" or "0 min early". delay is now a fractional minute count (delayMs / MS_IN_MINS). computeArrivalLabelFromDelay and the departed and arrived labels check only the sign (delay > 0 or delay < 0) and then print Math.round(Math.abs(delay)). So any prediction 1 to 29 seconds late renders as "0 min late" in the violet "late" color, and 1 to 29 seconds early renders as "0 min early". Before this change those cases were "On time" (the old code took the difference of floored minutes, as the Android ArrivalInfo that the comment cites does). GTFS-RT deviations are given in seconds, so small non-zero offsets are common. This affects every stop's arrivals list, not just the trip details pane. The new test preserves late direction without rounding a one-second difference to a minute asserts '0m late', so it locks in this behavior.
Agreed. An empty vehicleId should be treated as no vehicle selection. I'll account for both null and empty-string values while preserving the existing active-trip and previous-trip classification behavior.

Thanks for working through all of this. The trip-details side is now in good shape:
time is gone, so live status uses the server's real "now".
resolveLiveState gates "Live" on the active trip and a matching vehicle, and an empty vehicleId is handled.
Stale responses are dropped, and the error clears after a successful refresh.
The "0 min late" problem is fixed. roundedDelay now drives both the color and every label, so predictions a few seconds off read "On time" again.
A few things before this merges:
Please update the PR description and change "Fixes #330" to "Refs #330". The body still describes the removed time= approach and its test. The current request is the same as develop's, and nothing yet shows #330's cause is a vehicle still finishing its previous trip on the block. Merging with "Fixes" would auto-close the issue before we know that. If you can reproduce #330 (a stop and time where it happens) and show this change fixes it, "Fixes" is fine.
discards a late response after switching selected trips can pass without the guard. After resolveA(...) it waits only two Promise.resolve() ticks. That isn't enough for the json() await and Svelte's update to land, so the "Late trip A schedule" assertion would pass even if the stale-response check were removed. Wait long enough for the late response to actually apply before asserting, for example by awaiting a flushed fetch chain or using fake timers with advanceTimersByTimeAsync. A good check: temporarily remove the guard and confirm the test fails.
Please call out the arrival-label behavior change in the description. Delays now round from the exact seconds instead of comparing floored minutes, so 45 s late reads "1m late" and some boundary cases flip. "1 min early" also turns red instead of green. Both are reasonable, but they show up on every stop's arrivals list, so reviewers should see them stated explicitly.
Thanks for the detailed review. I agree with the distinction around the original issue, and I've update the description to use "Refs" rather than "Fixes".
I've also strengthen the stale-response test so it explicitly waits for the older response to complete, and verified that the test fails when the stale-response guard is removed. I've document the arrival-label rounding and color changes in the PR description as well.
I verified it using a mutation test: temporarily removing the stale-response guard causes the test to fail because the late response from Trip A gets rendered after switching to Trip B. Restoring the guard makes the test pass.
I've attached the failure output as evidence. This confirms that the test actually catches the regression rather than merely passing with the current implementation.
Thanks for the quick updates. The "Refs #330" wording and the stronger stale-response test are exactly what I was after.
One change to my third point: rather than documenting the "1 min early turns red" change, please keep 1 min early green, as it is on develop. A bus a minute early is close enough to on time that red overstates it.
In computeColor, change the early branch from roundedDelay < 0 to roundedDelay < -1:
Please also update the color test that expects red at -60 s so it expects green at 1 min early and red at 2 min early. The label can stay "1m early"; this only changes the color. With that in, I'm happy to take another look.
Thanks for the clarification! I've updated computeColor to keep 1-minute-early arrivals green and apply red styling from 2 minutes early onward. I've also updated the arrival and departure color tests while keeping the existing labels unchanged.
The relevant 38 tests are passing, and the changes are pushed. Happy to have another look!
