Unpack native FP8 experts in the dtype their forward runs in - #3232
The bug. Native FP8 MoE experts (transformers FP8Experts) unpack for GPTQ and imatrix to torch.get_default_dtype(), which is float32. Their fake-quantized forward doesn't use that tensor directly:
_quantized_linear → _quantized_weight encodes get_expert_weight(name, idx, input.dtype), the weight cast to the activation dtype.
Calibration encodes the float32 weight: iter_weights_for_calibration passes no dtype.
With #3197's static IQ formats, the codes GPTQ and imatrix pin are therefore not the ones a BF16 forward uses. That forward re-encodes the BF16 cast under the pinned scales. On a toy FP8Experts (256 × 256, 2 experts, iq2_xxs imatrix), 11–18% of blocks differ. For every other format, calibration likewise sees slightly different weights than the forward. The export is unaffected: it casts to the export dtype the same way the forward does (discussed in #3197).
The fix._QuantFP8Experts._materialized_dtype() returns the dtype of the checkpoint's other weights, read from the experts' config.dtype, and falls back to the default dtype when the config has none. That is the dtype the forward casts to and the one the HF export defaults to (_resolve_export_dtype).
unpack_weight dequantizes each expert straight to that dtype.
get_expert_weight called with no dtype also dequantizes packed experts to it. Weight-only calibration of experts that stay packed (e.g. max) goes through this path.
Calibration, the fake-quantized forward and the export now encode the same tensor, as they already do for every other module, and unpacked experts take half the memory.
Usage
No API change.
Testing
New test_native_fp8_experts_calibrate_in_the_dtype_their_forward_runs_in, parametrized over imatrix and GPTQ (block size 256), on FP8Experts with a BF16 config:
Max calibration on the packed experts: the per-block amax equals that of the BF16 forward weights.
Unpacked and calibrated on BF16 inputs: the codes the BF16 forward encodes equal the pinned codes for every expert and projection.
Both parametrizations fail with main's huggingface.py. They take 1.07 s (imatrix) and 0.62 s (GPTQ) on CPU (--durations=0).
tests/unit/torch/quantization and tests/unit/torch/export: 2333 passed, 1 skipped.
tests/gpu/torch/quantization/test_fp8_experts.py: 6 passed on an RTX PRO 6000.
Not run: an end-to-end PTQ of a real FP8 MoE checkpoint.

Is this change backward compatible?: ✅ Configs without a dtype still materialize experts in the default dtype. With a config dtype, experts are now unpacked, and dequantized when no dtype is asked for, in that dtype instead of float32, which is the dtype the forward already ran in.
If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in CONTRIBUTING.md: N/A
Did you write any new necessary tests?: ✅
Did you update Changelog?: N/A. GPTQ and imatrix on fused experts and pinned IQ codes are both unreleased.
Did you get Claude approval on this PR?: ✅ The latest Claude review, on b420d24, reports no remaining code issues.
Native FP8 expert weights now retain the configured floating-point dtype when unpacked or dequantized, rather than defaulting to PyTorch’s default dtype. This helps preserve weight values when the configured dtype differs from the default.
Calibration and export workflows now use weights materialized in the appropriate dtype, improving consistency with the model’s forward-pass weights.
Native FP8 expert weights now use the configured checkpoint dtype when it is a floating-point dtype wider than one byte. The added BF16 tests cover calibration and packed weights for imatrix and GPTQ.

Summary
FP8 expert unpacking and calibration modelopt/torch/quantization/plugins/huggingface.py, tests/unit/torch/quantization/plugins/test_fused_experts.py, modelopt/torch/export/moe_utils.py
One-byte expert weights use the configured floating-point dtype when it is wider than one byte; otherwise, materialization uses PyTorch’s default dtype. Unpacking applies the resolved dtype to allocation and dequantization. Parameterized BF16 tests cover max calibration and packed iq2_xxs weights for imatrix and GPTQ. The export accessor docstring now describes native FP8 experts as being held in their checkpoint dtype.
NVIDIA/Model-Optimizer#2750: Adds a keep-fused export path that folds unpacked expert weights through get_expert_weight, which this change updates for native FP8 weights.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b420d

### What does this PR do?
Type of change: new feature
GPTQ and imatrix calibration of the IQ formats, which all carry an FP16
super-block scale (`iq1_s`, `iq1_m`, `iq2_xxs`, `iq2_xs`, `iq2_s`), now
keep the scales and importance they chose, so QAD starts from their
codes.
**The problem.** Calibration used to overwrite the weight with its
decoding. QAD then re-encoded that decoded weight, which predicts each
block's scale `d` from its amax. That prediction is not idempotent on
decoded blocks, so the codes moved the first time a weight changed:
- On the 27B experiment below, every block's `d` moved.
- The relative error against the weight went from 0.17% to 4.2%.
- The KD loss went from 0.24 to 0.30 within four steps.
**What changes.** The codes are pinned for QAD:
- **Static scales:** the pinned payload's `d` and the search importance
stay fixed, and fake quant re-encodes the weight under them.
- The weight GPTQ encoded, and its decoding, both re-encode byte-exactly
to GPTQ's codes.
- A weight QAD updated moves to the nearest codes under those scales.
- New `GGMLFormat.payload_scales` reads `d` from a payload. The encoders
take `scales=`.
- **Unrounded weight:** GPTQ leaves its compensated weight, rounded to
the weight's dtype, instead of the decoding. imatrix leaves the weight
unchanged.
- **Checkpointing:** the importance is a buffer
(`_ggml_importance_<format>`) next to the pinned payload.
- It is saved by `mto.save` and by the Megatron sharded state dict.
There it is replicated on column-parallel layers and sharded along the
input on row-parallel layers.
- It stays float32 when the model is cast, as `Float16Module` does.
- **Export:** the Megatron and HF exporters encode the module's own
weight under the pinned scales before casting it (`pin_current_codes`),
so row slices of fused weights find their codes.
`q8_0` behaves as before: its scale is amax / 127, which a decoded block
re-encodes to exactly, so it has nothing to keep. IQ1_S joins the other
IQ formats now that its CUDA packer takes its scales from PyTorch
(#3204).
### Usage
No API change: the built-in GPTQ / imatrix recipes for these formats now
produce checkpoints that QAD (for example
`examples/megatron_bridge/distill.py`) trains under the calibrated
scales.
### Testing
- **Unit tests:** `tests/unit/torch/quantization` and
`tests/unit/torch/export` pass on this branch, rebased on `main` after
#3204: 2249 passed, 1 skipped. Four modules were skipped for local
diffusers / onnxscript import errors. New or extended tests:
- For each of the five IQ formats, GPTQ's unrounded weight and its
decoding encode to the pin, and a QAD update re-encodes under the pinned
scales and importance.
- Tests that used IQ1_S as the format without kept scales now use
`q8_0`: the pin-dropped-once-the-weight-changes test, and the non-static
case of save / restore and of the Megatron row-slice export.
- Casting a bf16 model with `bfloat16()` keeps the importance. This test
fails without the fp32 fix: bf16 importance moves 3–6% of the blocks.
- Save / restore, and the Megatron export of row slices, are
parametrized over a static and a non-static format.
- The packed-FP8-experts imatrix test now checks that imatrix pins its
codes, since IQ formats no longer write the weight.
- **GPU tests:**
- The GGML GPU tests (`test_ggml_gptq_cuda.py`,
`test_iq_formats_cuda.py`, `test_iq1_s_cuda.py`, GGML cases of
`test_gptq.py`) pass on this head on an RTX PRO 6000 (SM120): 97 passed,
19 skipped. Earlier commits also passed them on GB300.
- `tests/gpu_megatron/.../test_megatron.py` passed at TP4 on GB300
before the last three commits and the rebase; it checks that the
importance is saved.
- **End-to-end on Qwen3.8-27B:**
- **Setup:** the `nvidia/Qwen3.8-27B-NVFP4` layout with its NVFP4 MLPs
replaced by IQ2, W2A16 with FP8 attention. GPTQ, then one epoch of QAD
with Megatron-Bridge (131 iterations, PP4 × CP2, 64K, top-4096 KL
against the BF16 model). Both arms start from the same GPTQ codes.
- **Result:** validation KD loss, lower is better:
| Format | `main`, iter 100 | this PR, iter 100 | `main`, iter 131 |
this PR, iter 131 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iq2_s | 0.127 | 0.111 | 0.119 | 0.103 |
| iq2_xs | 0.148 | 0.127 | 0.141 | 0.119 |
| iq2_xxs | 0.173 | 0.146 | 0.163 | 0.137 |
This PR is 13–16% lower at every checkpoint from iteration 25 on.
- **Benchmarks** of the exported checkpoints, served as INT8 on vLLM
0.29: GPQA-Diamond ×16 and SciCode (subtask accuracy, 32 runs). Δ is
versus BF16 (GPQA 89.17, SciCode 47.54); the last column is the paired
difference with its standard error (problem bootstrap for SciCode):
| Format | Benchmark | GPTQ | `main` QAD | this PR QAD | this PR −
`main` |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iq2_s | GPQA | −4.51 | −3.38 | −3.31 | +0.06 (0.65) |
| iq2_s | SciCode | −6.37 | −3.79 | **−1.81** | **+1.98 (0.59)** |
| iq2_xs | GPQA | −7.99 | −6.00 | −5.93 | +0.06 (0.70) |
| iq2_xs | SciCode | −9.88 | −4.64 | −3.43 | +1.21 (0.66) |
| iq2_xxs | GPQA | −14.49 | −10.20 | **−8.49** | **+1.70 (0.78)** |
| iq2_xxs | SciCode | −16.35 | −6.62 | −6.11 | +0.51 (0.64) |
This PR is never worse. It is clearly better on iq2_s SciCode and
iq2_xxs GPQA, and ties on GPQA for iq2_s and iq2_xs. Its answers are
also 4–8% shorter on GPQA (16.6K / 17.5K / 19.0K tokens against 17.3K /
18.5K / 20.7K for `main`), closer to BF16's 14.5K.
- **Not measured:** the experiment covered the IQ2 formats only; IQ1_S
gets the same mechanism but has no QAD numbers yet.
- **Caveat:** these Megatron runs needed GGML codes to be re-encoded
after every optimizer step, which `main` now does (#3210). Both arms ran
with an equivalent workaround before it merged.
- **Native FP8 experts, fixed in #3232 (stacked on this PR):**
`FP8Experts` unpacked to float32, so GPTQ and imatrix picked codes on
float32 weights while a BF16 forward re-encoded their BF16 cast: 11–18%
of blocks on a toy model. #3232 unpacks them in the checkpoint's dtype.
Exports already match the forward.

Native FP8 experts unpacked to the default dtype, float32, while their
fake-quantized forward casts each expert to the activation dtype first. So
GPTQ and imatrix picked GGML codes on float32 weights that a BF16 forward
re-encoded differently: 11-18% of blocks on a toy model. They now unpack in
the dtype of the checkpoint's other weights, from the experts' config, so
calibration and the forward encode the same weights, at half the memory.

- Line 92: Remove the FP8 MoE unpacking bug-fix entry from CHANGELOG.rst; it was
introduced and fixed within the unreleased 0.49.0 cycle and does not belong in
the changelog. Keep the rationale in the PR description rather than adding it to
the changelog.
Review comments at @modelopt/torch/quantization/plugins/huggingface.py:
- Line 1283: Update the unpacking logic that reads self.config.dtype to use the
calibration or model execution dtype rather than assuming the configured dtype
is the forward dtype. If that dtype cannot be established, validate that it
matches before discarding FP8 weights so a mismatch cannot irreversibly round
them.
- Line 1288: Update the expert-weight copy that fills unpacked so
get_expert_weight receives the target dtype; ensure FP8 dequantization rounds
directly to that dtype rather than through the default dtype.

Nudge: the fix is correct and its test is meaningful. Two things to settle: the CHANGELOG entry looks like it breaks AGENTS.md's same-cycle rule, and the same dtype mismatch remains for experts that are still packed.
Needs action:
Drop the CHANGELOG.rst Bug Fixes entry. GPTQ/imatrix on fused experts and pinned IQ codes are both unreleased 0.49 features, so AGENTS.md says to skip a bug introduced and fixed in the same cycle. The entry also includes root-cause detail.
Decide whether _QuantFP8Experts.get_expert_weight's dtype=None default should resolve to the same config dtype. Then weight-only calibration of still-packed experts (max/MSE) would also see the weights the forward runs on (see inline).
Update the _local_expert_weight docstring in modelopt/torch/export/moe_utils.py, which still says unpacked FP8 experts are "held at the default dtype".
Optionally parametrize the new test over GPTQ as well, since the description claims to fix GPTQ too.
No action needed:
What I checked: GGMLGPTQHelper encodes each group in the stored weight's dtype, so unpacking to bf16 fixes GPTQ as well. pack() re-encodes under the pinned scales rather than returning cached codes, so the new test does check something. The existing FP8 tests build configs without dtype and keep the float32 fallback. No existing test was modified.

Bot comment.
Question on scope: this fixes the unpacked path. The same root cause is still there for experts that are not unpacked. get_expert_weight(name, idx) with dtype=None still dequantizes to torch.get_default_dtype(). iter_weights_for_calibration calls it that way, so max/MSE/local-Hessian weight calibration of packed FP8 experts still searches amax on float32 weights. Meanwhile the forward and _export_fused_experts quantize the bf16 cast.
Would it be simpler to resolve this dtype once, e.g. in a small _weight_dtype() helper, and use it both as get_expert_weight's default (dtype = dtype or self._weight_dtype()) and for this empty_like? Export and the forward always pass an explicit dtype, so they wouldn't change. test_native_fp8_experts_scales builds its config without dtype, so it keeps the float32 fallback.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in b420d24: get_expert_weight now falls back to _materialized_dtype() (the config dtype, else the default dtype) when no dtype is asked for. unpack_weight uses the same helper. Weight-only calibration of still-packed experts therefore dequantizes to the dtype the forward runs in. The test checks that the per-block ranges max records on packed experts equal those of the BF16 forward weights; that check fails on all 512 blocks without the change.
- Fix Hugging Face EAGLE training scaling gradients by the accumulation group size instead of averaging them when gradient accumulation is enabled.
- Native FP8 MoE experts (transformers ``FP8Experts``) now unpack, for GPTQ and imatrix, in the dtype of the checkpoint's other weights (such as BF16) instead of float32, which the fake-quantized forward casts them to anyway. Calibration now encodes the same weights the forward runs on, and unpacked experts take half the memory.

Bot comment.
AGENTS.md: "Skip bugs introduced and fixed within the same unreleased cycle." Both GPTQ/imatrix on HF fused experts and the pinned IQ codes that make this mismatch visible are 0.49 New Features above. The existing 0.49 entry "Fix PTQ of native Transformers FP8 experts to apply source weight scales…" suggests this unpack path is new in this cycle too. If so, please drop this entry. If you keep it, cut the implementation detail ("which the fake-quantized forward casts them to anyway"), which AGENTS.md says belongs in the PR description.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bot comment.
Optional: the description claims this fixes GPTQ as well. GGMLGPTQHelper leaves the weight at its encode input rounded to the stored dtype, so the same assertion should hold after {"method": "gptq", "block_size": 256} and fail without the fix. Parametrizing over ["imatrix", gptq], as test_native_fp8_experts_reject_packed_weight_updates does, would cover both paths for little extra code.

Fixed in b420d24: the test is parametrized over imatrix and GPTQ (block 256). Both check that the codes the BF16 forward encodes equal the pinned codes.

Every earlier concern is fixed in b420d24 and the code is ready to merge. What's left is a PR description that no longer matches the diff, plus a test runtime that hasn't been reported.
Needs action:
Update the PR description. The checklist still claims a CHANGELOG.rst bug-fix entry, but b420d24 dropped it. The test is now named test_native_fp8_experts_calibrate_in_the_dtype_their_forward_runs_in. "The fix" should also say that calling get_expert_weight with no dtype now dequantizes packed experts to _materialized_dtype().
Re-run the Testing commands on b420d24 and record the results. Include the --durations for both parametrizations of the new test, since AGENTS.md requires a new unit test to run in well under 5s.
No action needed:
✔️ Resolved since the last review: the CHANGELOG entry is gone and packed experts now dequantize to the config dtype by default, with a max-calibration check added to the test. Also fixed: the _local_expert_weight docstring, the GPTQ parametrization, and CodeRabbit's double-rounding point (unpack_weight now passes dtype through).
The author's pushback on CodeRabbit's config.dtype thread holds. No forward has run yet when unpack_weight is called, and _resolve_export_dtype reads the same config.dtype.
The export paths always pass an explicit dtype, so this change doesn't affect them. The existing FP8 tests build configs without dtype, so they keep the default-dtype fallback.

What does this PR do?
Type of change: Bug fix
Follows #3197 (merged).
The bug. Native FP8 MoE experts (transformers
FP8Experts) unpack for GPTQ and imatrix totorch.get_default_dtype(), which is float32. Their fake-quantized forward doesn't use that tensor directly:_quantized_linear→_quantized_weightencodesget_expert_weight(name, idx, input.dtype), the weight cast to the activation dtype.iter_weights_for_calibrationpasses no dtype. With #3197's static IQ formats, the codes GPTQ and imatrix pin are therefore not the ones a BF16 forward uses. That forward re-encodes the BF16 cast under the pinned scales. On a toy
FP8Experts(256 × 256, 2 experts,iq2_xxsimatrix), 11–18% of blocks differ. For every other format, calibration likewise sees slightly different weights than the forward. The export is unaffected: it casts to the export dtype the same way the forward does (discussed in #3197).The fix.
_QuantFP8Experts._materialized_dtype()returns the dtype of the checkpoint's other weights, read from the experts'config.dtype, and falls back to the default dtype when the config has none. That is the dtype the forward casts to and the one the HF export defaults to (_resolve_export_dtype).unpack_weightdequantizes each expert straight to that dtype.get_expert_weightcalled with no dtype also dequantizes packed experts to it. Weight-only calibration of experts that stay packed (e.g. max) goes through this path.Calibration, the fake-quantized forward and the export now encode the same tensor, as they already do for every other module, and unpacked experts take half the memory.
