Change

Rework cache-breakpoint marker detection in the shared OpenRouter request transform into a single pass over array and object nodes, returning as soon as a node owns a cache_control or prompt_cache_breakpoint key.

addCacheBreakpoints keeps today's breakpoint placement and logging for chat-completions, responses and messages bodies; only the marker scan changes.

Tests

apps/web/src/tests/openrouter-request-helpers.test.ts gains three cases in the existing addCacheBreakpoints group:

  • a chat-completions body whose content block carries cache_control keeps its placement;
  • a responses body whose first input item carries prompt_cache_breakpoint keeps its placement;
  • a chat-completions body with many object nodes keeps its placement and the call returns.

End-to-end evidence

Ran the ai-gateway app on the work VM in development mode against local PostgreSQL and a local stub inference upstream, with an owned fake account and a custom LLM definition whose base URL points at the stub. Over POST /api/v1/chat/completions:

Request body Result Breakpoints at the stub upstream
plain system and user messages 200 system message and last user message
user content carrying a nested cache_control 200 none added
user content with a deeply structured JSON value 200 system message and last user message

Unit and type checks on this VM: the request-helpers suite passes (53 tests), @kilocode/web-shared typecheck passes, and oxlint reports no findings for the changed files.

Proxy answers

The owner's proxy gave these answers in the owner's place.

  1. Question: What should the marker scan return when it reaches its visit count? Answer: Treat as present (true). Confidence: 0.65.
  2. Question: How large should the visit count be? Answer: 100,000 nodes. Confidence: 0.60.

…request bodies

Rework cache-breakpoint marker detection in the shared OpenRouter request
transform into a single traversal over array and object nodes. Breakpoint
placement for chat-completions, responses and messages bodies is unchanged, and
tests cover marker detection in chat-completions content blocks and in
responses input.
Read the last message content into a local and assert it is an array before
indexing, so the nested marker case does not rely on a non-null assertion.

Code Review Summary

Status: 1 Issue Found | Recommendation: Address before merge

Executive Summary

The new pre-push budget check bounds the pending stack, but budget exhaustion still returns true, so bodies over 100,000 nodes without a marker silently lose cache-breakpoint placement.

File Line Issue
packages/web-shared/src/lib/ai-gateway/providers/openrouter/request-helpers.ts 201 Budget exhaustion returns true, indistinguishable from finding a marker, so addCacheBreakpoints skips placement for bodies over 100,000 nodes that contain no cache_control/prompt_cache_breakpoint. The pinned test at apps/web/src/tests/openrouter-request-helpers.test.ts:766 encodes this degraded behavior.

Status: 2 Issues Found | Recommendation: Address before merge

Executive Summary

The iterative marker scan avoids the deep-recursion stack overflow, but exhausting its new node budget is silently treated as "markers already present", disabling cache breakpoints for the largest requests.

SUGGESTION

File Line Issue
packages/web-shared/src/lib/ai-gateway/providers/openrouter/request-helpers.ts 208 The budget is checked only when popping, so a single wide array is fully pushed onto pending and peak memory scales with input rather than with the cap.

Review guidance: REVIEW.md from base branch main

Account for queued nodes in one place while walking the body, and keep the new
test bodies typed as their request kinds so each case narrows correctly.

What size (MBs) would the request have to be to trigger a stack overflow?

bot: Depth, not size, is the limiting dimension here: in a maximally nested body each level costs two bytes, so the 4.5 MB request-body ceiling (Vercel returns FUNCTION_PAYLOAD_TOO_LARGE above it) spans roughly 2.25 million levels.

Measured on this branch by calling addCacheBreakpoints (tsx on this VM, Node v24.22, repo pin 24.14.1) on a chat-completions body whose messages[0].content is nested arrays:

Nesting levels Body size Result
3,906 7.9 KB returns, breakpoints placed
8,400 16.5 KB returns, breakpoints placed
100,000 200 KB returns, placement skipped (visit limit reached)
500,000 1.0 MB returns, placement skipped (visit limit reached)
1,000,000 2.0 MB returns, placement skipped (visit limit reached)
2,250,000 4.5 MB returns, placement skipped (visit limit reached)

The scan keeps its own work list, so call-stack use does not grow with nesting depth, and it stops after 100,000 visited nodes, which is why the large rows finish in single-digit milliseconds. JSON.parse accepted the 2.25-million-level body too; a body it rejects still returns the existing 400 response.

So no request size within the body limit reaches a stack overflow in this transform.
