fix(booking): never assign a round-robin host who is unavailable (#146) - #147
Conversation
validateBookingTime answers "does this slot exist?" — for round-robin that means only that AT LEAST ONE candidate is within hours, mirroring slots.pickHosts so /slots still offers a day where some host is free. It does not answer "who gets assigned?", and that assignment happens later in booking.Service.Create by rotation strategy. Passing Create the unfiltered pool let it pick a host who had declared themselves unavailable, booking them on the available host's slots. calendarFreeHosts does not cover this: it filters external calendar busy, and returns the pool untouched when no calendar provider is connected — the common self-hosted case, where overrides are the only availability signal. filterAvailableHosts narrows the pool before Create. Applied to BOTH creation paths — the REST handler and createBookingForSlug, which MCP and the booking assistant share — so neither entry point can assign an unavailable host. Credits reporter MinosChatzidakis for the diagnosis and candidate fix.

Important
The production fix looks right — I traced both creation paths and the residual behaviour is unchanged for non-round-robin. But one of the three new tests doesn't test what its comment claims, and that gap is the PR's headline selling point ("applied to both creation paths"). The MCP/assistant entry point has no coverage at all today.
Reviewed changes
filterAvailableHosts(internal/handler/booking_handler.go) — new helper that narrows a candidate host pool to those whose configured availability (weekly rules + date overrides) covers[startAt, endAt), returningerrSlotUnavailablewhen nothing is left. Correct by construction for the non-round-robin case:validateBookingTimealready requires every candidate to be available there, so it can only shrink the pool wherevalidateBookingTimedeliberately doesn't ("at least one candidate is in hours", mirroringslots.pickHosts).- Applied at both creation call sites —
createBookingForSlug(shared by the MCPcreate_bookingtool and the conversational assistant) andCreateBooking(public REST, which is what the booking page posts to). I confirmed viagreponbookingSvc.Createthat these are the only two booking-creation paths in the tree, so no third entry point is left unfiltered. Reschedule is also fine:validateRescheduleTimecallsvalidateBookingTimewith routing mode"fixed", which requires every assigned host to be available. - Three new tests (
round_robin_unavailable_host_test.go) — override on the priority-0 rotation host over REST; the same scenario nominally covering the slug path; all-hosts-unavailable refusal.
ℹ️ Round-robin optional hosts still bypass configured availability
filterAvailableHosts is applied to candidates only, and in round_robin mode resolveBookingHostPool puts required hosts in a separate slice and optional hosts in another — optional hosts are in neither candidates nor required, so nothing in this path checks them against a host's configured hours. calendarFreeHosts only screens them for external-calendar busy (and returns them untouched when no provider is connected), and booking.Service.Create then attaches any overlap-free optional host. So the exact scenario in #146 — a rotation member with a full-day unavailability override — still books them onto the meeting as a guest. This is pre-existing rather than introduced here, and it may well be intended ("optional" = drop them if you can't), so I'm not asking for it in this PR; flagging it because the fix's title is a universal claim and this is the one place it doesn't hold.

This test never reaches createBookingForSlug — postBooking posts to /v1/bookings, i.e. h.CreateBooking, the same REST handler test 1 already covers. I confirmed it by deleting the filterAvailableHosts call from createBookingForSlug and re-running: all three tests still pass, so this one contributes nothing to the second entry point. Given that covering MCP/assistant is the reason the fix touches createBookingForSlug at all, the comment above currently promises coverage the test doesn't deliver. Driving the real path is easy — connectMCP(t, h) + client.CallTool(..., Name: "create_booking", ...) is the established pattern (see TestMCPBookingCalendarErrors in booking_calendar_check_test.go).
Technical details
# TestRoundRobin_slugPathSkipsUnavailableHost does not exercise the slug path
## Affected sites
- internal/handler/round_robin_unavailable_host_test.go:71 — `postBooking` → `h.CreateBooking` (REST), identical to `TestRoundRobin_neverAssignsHostWithUnavailableOverride` apart from the slot time (14:00 vs 10:00)
- internal/handler/round_robin_unavailable_host_test.go:53-55 — comment claims it guards "the slug path that MCP and the booking assistant share"
## Required outcome
- The assertion must fail when the `filterAvailableHosts` call inside `createBookingForSlug` (internal/handler/booking_handler.go:592) is removed. Today it passes either way.
## Suggested approach
- Build the request through the in-process MCP client: `client := connectMCP(t, h)` then `client.CallTool(t.Context(), &mcp.CallToolParams{Name: "create_booking", Arguments: map[string]any{"event_type_id": slug, "slot_start": ..., "attendee_name": ..., "attendee_email": ...}})` — the pattern used by `TestMCPBookingCalendarErrors` in internal/handler/booking_calendar_check_test.go:248.
- Keep the DB read of `bookings.host_id`; the point is which entry point produced the row, not the response shape.
## Open questions for the human
- Alternatively drop the test and fold the slug-path claim into test 1's comment. Covering it is better, since `createBookingForSlug` is the MCP + assistant seam.| } | ||

This passes without the fix: with filterAvailableHosts stubbed to a pass-through, validateBookingTime's round-robin branch already returns errSlotUnavailable when no candidate is in hours, so the 409 came from pre-existing code. It also can't be exercising filterAvailableHosts's len(available) == 0 branch (internal/handler/booking_handler.go:443) — that branch is unreachable, since validateBookingTime runs first at both call sites and guarantees at least one available candidate. Keeping the test is fine as a regression guard on the all-out case; the comment claiming it's covered by this PR's behaviour is what's misleading.
Technical details
# TestRoundRobin_allHostsUnavailableStillRejected passes pre-fix
## Affected sites
- internal/handler/round_robin_unavailable_host_test.go:84-104 — asserts only "no 201"; the rejection is produced by internal/handler/booking_handler.go:350-359
- internal/handler/booking_handler.go:443 — `return nil, errSlotUnavailable` — unreachable: `validateBookingTime` (internal/handler/booking_handler.go:335-358) already fails the request unless at least one candidate is available, at both call sites (booking_handler.go:589 and :912, both immediately before the new call)
## Required outcome
- Either say plainly in the comment that this locks in pre-existing `validateBookingTime` behaviour, or drop the test so the PR's tests are all ones that fail before the fix.
## Suggested approach
- If the dead branch is meant to stay as a defensive guard, one line in `filterAvailableHosts`'s doc comment saying it cannot fire today would stop the next reader from hunting for the case it protects.
Closes #146.
The bug
An event type with two rotation hosts, one of whom declared a full-day unavailability override, would still book — and could assign the unavailable host, on the available host's slots.
Your diagnosis was right, and the mechanism is a split between two different questions:
validateBookingTimeanswers "does this slot exist?" For round-robin that means only "at least one candidate is within their own hours". That's deliberate — it mirrorsslots.pickHosts, because the public/slotslisting must still offer a day where some host is free. Correct for the listing, wrong for the assignment.booking.Service.Create, purely by rotation strategy. It was being handed the unfiltered pool.So the day correctly looked bookable (your host was free), and the rotation then picked the host who had said they were off.
Worth noting why
calendarFreeHostsdidn't catch it: that filters on external calendar busy, and returns the pool untouched when no calendar provider is connected — the common self-hosted case, where overrides are the only availability signal. Hence "the unavailable host is considered partially available by the app".The fix
filterAvailableHostsnarrows the candidate pool to hosts actually free within their own availability beforeCreatesees it. Pure DB reads, no external calls.Applied to both creation paths:
CreateBooking(REST)createBookingForSlug— shared by the MCP tool and the conversational booking assistantYour snippet sat in the REST handler only, so as written it would have left the MCP and assistant paths still assigning unavailable hosts. The behaviour you described would have persisted there.
For non-round-robin modes
validateBookingTimealready requires every candidate to be available, so the filter is a no-op there and behaviour is unchanged.Tests
