Python and Node functions can be traced through the generated trace package, both when called directly and when passed into BAML as callbacks. A decorated callback produces one host span for its dispatched execution. Context and cancellation propagate through async work and BAML re-entry, and remain available until callback cleanup actually finishes.

Public API

Python:

from baml_sdk import trace
from baml_sdk import host_callable_tests as baml

@trace.instrument
def add_one(value: int) -> int:
    return value + 1

assert add_one(7) == 8
assert baml.call_int_callback(add_one, 7) == 8

Node:

import { trace } from './baml_sdk/index.js';
import * as baml from './baml_sdk/host_callable_tests/index.js';

const addOne = trace.instrument((value: number) => value + 1);

addOne(7);
await baml.call_int_callback_async(addOne, 7);

Both calls execute the body once. The direct call creates a host invocation; the BAML callback adopts its dispatch invocation. Sync and async bodies preserve their returned values and escaping application errors.

Host code reads ambient state through trace.current_context() and trace.current_cancel_token(). Outside execution, these return an empty detached context and None/null, respectively. Execution context propagates privately through Python ContextVar and Node AsyncLocalStorage.

Dynamic calls are available under the experimental namespace:

from baml_sdk.experimental import invoke, invoke_async
import { invoke, invokeAsync } from './baml_sdk/experimental.js';

Callback adoption and option precedence

A matching outer trace.instrument wrapper adopts the callback dispatch exactly once. Recursive calls and later direct calls create fresh host invocations using the marker's configuration. Concurrent calls to the same wrapper receive independent context and one-shot adoption permits. Explicitly stacked SDK wrappers produce one invocation per wrapper; the outer wrapper adopts dispatch and inner wrappers create children.

Adoption uses exact wrapper identity stored in weak registries. Copied function attributes, display names, and unknown third-party wrapper chains cannot suppress a real invocation. Python bound methods resolve through their exact wrapped function. Python's adoption permit covers coroutine execution after initial creation, not just the synchronous act of constructing the coroutine. Node scopes its permit through AsyncLocalStorage.

The callback options originate at the BAML call site:

function with_lookup(lookup: (int) -> int) -> int {
    lookup(7, $trace = trace.context(metadata = { stage: "lookup" }))
}

The matching host wrapper runs inside that dispatch boundary instead of opening a second host invocation or reapplying its declaration defaults over the caller's explicit options.

Context is resolved before the callback body begins:

inherited caller context → host declaration defaults → explicit BAML callback options

For example, a host declaration can supply a default while the BAML call overrides it:

@trace.instrument(trace.context(metadata={"stage": "host_default"}))
async def callback(value):
    assert trace.current_context().metadata == {"stage": "baml_call"}
    return value

await baml.call_configured_callback_async(
    callback, 7,
    trace.context(metadata={"stage": "baml_call"}),
)

Unrelated inherited keys survive, and null values remove keys. A child BAML call can apply its own context patch without changing the callback's context.

Explicit callback mode overrides the host declaration's mode. Omitted mode uses the declaration default against the host Span default, and a reservation selects Span with its assigned ID. Capture requests combine by OR: explicit false does not veto a declaration request. Unmarked callbacks also receive explicit callback context and a fixed native host boundary.

Declaration registration and bridge ownership

Registration transfers immutable declaration metadata into the existing host-value owner. Declaring or registering an instrumented function captures no ambient runtime, invocation, event loop, or executor. The marker and usage-error helper are injected into the generated canonical trace package; shared bridge code does not import an application's generated SDK.

The ABI envelope continues to carry its existing opaque inherited-state handle. Marker adoption requires no wire-schema change. The inherited-state handle identifies the execution environment a descendant should inherit, independently of a submitted call ID or a recorded span ID.

A separate dispatch owner retains the physical callback execution and recording resources. Result observation does not release physical execution. Callback owners and annotations are released outside registry locks, including error/rollback paths, so destruction cannot re-enter a locked registry.

Execution lifetime and recording

Cancellation may return control to the caller while an async callback is still cleaning up. That cleanup retains its resolved context and live cancellation authority. Recording and execution resources remain owned until physical callback exit; shutdown waits for that exit.

InheritedInvocationState carries immutable inherited metadata and ancestry alongside references to live cancellation authority and the absolute deadline. It does not retain the parent invocation, recording producer, or waiter. A retained context can therefore supply lineage and cancellation to a later descendant after the parent invocation and span have finished, without keeping the parent execution alive. Reservations, recording/capture overrides, result channels, and call IDs remain invocation-local.

Host definitions share the runtime's function-ID namespace, appear in metadata queries, and reach persisted recordings. Definition identity excludes display labels. Python uses lexical definition/wrapper coordinates; Node uses source content and wrapper coordinates, with an explicit missing-source fallback.

Requested input/output/error captures use the existing bounded snapshot format: depth 8, 512 values, 64 KiB. Capture avoids application serializers, getters, Proxy traps, and iterator protocols. Direct wrappers preserve body execution, returned values, escaping exceptions, and live generated cancellation authority. Recording failures preserve application behavior and produce bounded diagnostics.

Web codegen does not expose host instrumentation. Its private compatibility helper rejects unsupported instrumentation before application execution; the shared runtime helpers remain available for generated callback code.

Coverage and validation

Matching Python/Node acceptance cases cover callback adoption, context and mode precedence, recursion, stacked wrappers, concurrent reuse, unmarked callbacks, BAML re-entry, and cancellation cleanup. Language-specific cases cover Python bound methods and explicit thread context handoff, and Node receivers, variadic arguments, Promise results, getters, and Proxies. Native tests inspect persisted span counts, capture policy, reservation IDs, and shutdown waiting for callback exit.

The detailed implementation validation at revision 6122f484c was:

  • 290 engine, VM, resource, and dispatch unit tests passed, including annotation transfer/rollback and execution-owner retention after waiter retirement.
  • 40 callback/context/host integration tests passed. Four host recording tests also passed with telemetry disabled.
  • Persisted recordings verified context precedence and null removal, explicit Span/Timing/Hidden modes, marker defaults, capture-request OR, assigned reservation IDs, retained context, and shutdown waiting for physical exit.
  • Python function-call Ruff, Pyright, and pytest gates passed, including 26 host cases. All 18 TypeScript function-call/type-shape gates across Node, Chromium, and Cloudflare Workers passed, including 20 Node host cases. Package type resolution passed. Both Worker runtime gates completed after slow startup.
  • Eight additional shared Python/Node acceptance cases have identical names. Python synchronous BAML entry and bound-method cases are explicitly language-specific. The existing parity report was updated without weakening prior requirements.
  • Workspace native and Wasm Clippy and commit hooks passed. SDK fixtures and native extensions were regenerated against the same commit to preserve strict bytecode compatibility. The corresponding repository CI run passed.

These counts describe that tested implementation revision; they are not a new local test run after Canary synchronization.

Sources: Python acceptance cases, Node acceptance cases, native recording and lifecycle tests.

The stack is based on Canary 213cd9c. Engine and C# generator compile checks, Rust formatting, and whitespace checks pass after synchronization. No test suites were run locally for the sync. Automatic PR workflows are queued: BAML Language CI, BAML Runtime, and Developer Docs.

Before synchronization, the final SDK surface revision passed repository CI, including Python, Node, web SDK, and Rust test lanes.

Scope

Host instrumentation supports Python and Node ordinary sync/async functions. Follow-up work includes public C ABI host lifecycle slots, TypeScript method decorators, richer generated-value capture, persisted host call-site source maps, and host signature/default binding for dispatched input capture. Unmarked callback definitions use an unknown-source fallback; unknown third-party wrapper chains have no automatic deduplication guarantee. Generators, custom awaitables/Promise subclasses, multiprocessing propagation, browser/Worker instrumentation, and hooks are outside this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added instrument tracing for Python and Node.js TypeScript functions, with configurable input, output, and error capture.
    • Host calls can inherit execution context and cancellation, and appear in traces with captured values.
    • Callback tracing and context adoption are supported while preserving normal callback behavior.
    • Added execution-context and cancellation-token access. Dynamic invocation APIs are available through the experimental SDK facade rather than the SDK root.
  • API Changes
    • Invocation-context access has moved to execution-context and trace APIs; the previous invocation-context facade is no longer available.
  • Limitations
    • Host instrumentation is not supported in the TypeScript web runtime; using instrument there raises a usage error.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds host-function instrumentation to the engine and Python and TypeScript bridges. It propagates invocation context and cancellation, records host telemetry and bounded value snapshots, and adds callback context adoption. The TypeScript web bridge exposes the API but does not support host instrumentation.

🟡 Minor · Update the test registration stub to accept the marker argument. · host_value.rs:75-87

baml_language/sdks/python/rust/bridge_python/src/host_value.rs:75-87
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the test registration stub to accept the marker argument.

encode_call_args calls the monkeypatched register_host_callable with (value, marker_for(value)). The current one-argument lambda can raise an argument-count TypeError before encoding completes.

Suggested fix
-monkeypatch.setattr(_proto, "register_host_callable", lambda _value: 999)
+monkeypatch.setattr(
+    _proto, "register_host_callable", lambda _value, _marker: 999

Generated SDK callers can supply tracing, cancellation, and timeouts
independently of their BAML application arguments. The same controls
apply to generated functions and methods, returned BAML callables,
dynamic invocation, and supported prompt/stream/request operations.
Omitted application arguments still use BAML defaults; explicit null is
still a supplied value.

### Public invocation controls

`BamlOptions` belongs to the generated SDK and uses that SDK's generated
`trace.Options`/`trace.ReservedSpan` and cancellation-token types.
Python supplies `_baml`; TypeScript supplies `$baml`; other SDKs expose
the equivalent native options form shown below. Generic type bindings
remain a separate argument.

```python
from baml_sdk import hello_world_async, trace
from baml_sdk.baml.spawn import CancelToken
source = CancelToken.new()
result = await hello_world_async(_baml={
    "timeout_ms": 1000,
    "cancel": source,
    "trace": trace.context(metadata={"request": "abc"}),
})
```

```typescript
import { hello_world_async, trace } from './baml_sdk/index.js';
const controller = new AbortController();
const result = await hello_world_async({ $baml: {
    timeoutMs: 1000,
    signal: controller.signal,
    trace: trace.context({ metadata: { request: 'abc' } }),
} });
```

Native cancellation sources stay idiomatic: TypeScript uses `signal`, C#
places its .NET `CancellationToken` inside `BamlOptions`, Go retains the
leading `context.Context`, Kotlin's `bamlCall` forwards coroutine
cancellation to the original future, and Swift's async path observes
awaiting-task cancellation.

Options are snapshotted before application-value encoding. Timeouts use
the owning runtime's monotonic clock and become an absolute deadline, so
BAML re-entry cannot restart a parent's budget. Omitted or null controls
preserve inherited state. Unknown controls, malformed trace/token
values, and invalid timeouts reject before execution. In the millisecond
profiles, explicit zero expires immediately; Go's native `time.Duration`
zero adds no deadline and positive values retain nanosecond precision.

### Dynamic calls, returned callables, and callback state

Dynamic invocation accepts a fully qualified function name or a returned
BAML callable plus a separate application-argument map:

```python
from baml_sdk import invoke, invoke_async
from baml_sdk import host_callable_tests as baml
assert invoke("user.optional_args_probe", {"arg0": 1}, _baml={}) == [1, 5, 99]
add = baml.make_adder(3)
assert add(4, _baml={"timeout_ms": 1000}) == 7
assert await add.call_async(4, _baml={"timeout_ms": 1000}) == 7
```

Python exposes `invoke`/`invoke_async` and TypeScript exposes
`invoke`/`invokeAsync` from the generated facade in this PR.
Control-like names inside a dynamic application map remain application
keys. Specialized callable handles reject new generic bindings. Returned
callables retain their native identity when passed back into BAML.

Ordinary callbacks can read the effective cancellation token through the
generated invocation facade and inspect context through
`trace.current_context()`. Python and Node carry ambient execution state
across supported async work. TypeScript browser/Worker continuations use
explicit invocation scopes. Retained effective tokens continue to
observe upstream cancellation after the original callback completes;
cancelling a child does not cancel its upstream source. No decorator is
required for these behaviors.

The shared bridge provides data-only trace/context projections. It does
not import an application's generated SDK or create an extra invocation
just to inspect context.

### Calling forms across languages

Every example lists the same four combinations: required arguments only,
optional application arguments only, invocation options only, and both.
The fixture's `arg0 = 1`, `opt1` default `5`, and expression default
`opt2 = 99` produce `[1, 5, 99]` when `opt1` is omitted and `[1, 7, 99]`
when supplied. Sync and async siblings support the same combinations
where exposed.

### Python

```python
opts: BamlOptions = {"timeout_ms": 1000}
optional_args_probe(1)
optional_args_probe(1, opt1=7)
optional_args_probe(1, _baml=opts)
optional_args_probe(1, opt1=7, _baml=opts)
```

Async: `await optional_args_probe_async(...)` uses the same keywords.
`_types` remains separate from `_baml`.

### TypeScript: Node, browser, and Workers

All three environments expose the same generated argument shapes.

```typescript
const opts: BamlOptions = { timeoutMs: 1000 };
optional_args_probe(1);
optional_args_probe(1, { opt1: 7 });
optional_args_probe(1, { $baml: opts });
optional_args_probe(1, { opt1: 7, $baml: opts });
```

Async: `await optional_args_probe_async(...)` uses the same object.
Native `AbortSignal` belongs inside `BamlOptions.signal`; `$types`
remains separate. The four-form matrix runs independently on Node,
Chromium, and Workers.

### Go

```go
seven := int64(7)
opts := baml_sdk.BamlOptions{Timeout: time.Second}
baml_sdk.OptionalArgsProbe(ctx, 1)
baml_sdk.OptionalArgsProbe(ctx, 1,
    baml_sdk.WithOptionalArgsProbeOpt1(&seven))
baml_sdk.OptionalArgsProbe(ctx, 1,
    baml_sdk.WithOptions(opts))
baml_sdk.OptionalArgsProbe(ctx, 1,
    baml_sdk.WithOptionalArgsProbeOpt1(&seven),
    baml_sdk.WithOptions(opts))
```

Calls return `(result, error)`. Go has no separate generated async
sibling. `Timeout` is a native `time.Duration`; zero adds no deadline,
while positive values retain nanosecond precision. Leading context
inheritance remains in place.

### Rust

```rust
use baml_bridge::OptionalArg::Unset;
let opts = baml_sdk::BamlOptions::new().timeout_ms(1000);
baml_sdk::optional_args_probe(1, Unset, Unset)?;
baml_sdk::optional_args_probe(1, Some(7), Unset)?;
baml_sdk::optional_args_probe_with_options(1, Unset, Unset, &opts)?;
baml_sdk::optional_args_probe_with_options(1, Some(7), Unset, &opts)?;
```

Async uses `optional_args_probe_async(...).await?` and
`optional_args_probe_async_with_options(...).await?`. `Unset` omits the
optional wire argument; `None` supplies null.

### C++17

```cpp
auto kwargs = baml_sdk::optional_args_probe_opts{}
    .set_opt1(std::optional<int64_t>{7});
auto opts = baml_sdk::baml_options{}.timeout_ms(1000);
baml_sdk::optional_args_probe(1);
baml_sdk::optional_args_probe(1, kwargs);
baml_sdk::optional_args_probe(1, {}, opts);
baml_sdk::optional_args_probe(1, kwargs, opts);
```

The empty application-options struct in form 3 is required to skip the
middle argument. The final `const baml_options&` defaults to `{}`. Async
uses `optional_args_probe_async(...).get()`.

### Java

```java
var opts = BamlOptions.builder().timeoutMs(1000).build();
Fns.optional_args_probe(1);
Fns.optional_args_probe(1, o -> o.opt1(7L));
Fns.optional_args_probe(1, opts);
Fns.optional_args_probe(1, o -> o.opt1(7L), opts);
```

Async uses `Fns.optional_args_probe_async(...).join()` with the same
overloads. Generic type bindings remain a separate argument before
`BamlOptions`.

### Kotlin

Kotlin consumes the generated Java SDK and adds coroutine adapters.

```kotlin
val opts = BamlOptions.builder().timeoutMs(1000L).build()
bamlCall { Fns.optional_args_probe_async(1L) }
bamlCall { Fns.optional_args_probe_async(1L, { it.opt1(7L) }) }
bamlCall { Fns.optional_args_probe_async(1L, opts) }
bamlCall { Fns.optional_args_probe_async(1L, { it.opt1(7L) }, opts) }
```

`bamlCall` awaits the original future and forwards coroutine
cancellation to it. Synchronous Kotlin call sites use the Java sync
overloads.

### C#

```csharp
var opts = new BamlOptions { TimeoutMs = 1000 };
Functions.OptionalArgsProbe(1);
Functions.OptionalArgsProbe(1, opt1: 7L);
Functions.OptionalArgsProbe(1, baml: opts);
Functions.OptionalArgsProbe(1, opt1: 7L, baml: opts);
```

Async uses `await Functions.OptionalArgsProbeAsync(...)`. Native .NET
cancellation moves inside `BamlOptions.CancellationToken`; the generated
BAML token uses `BamlOptions.Cancel`. Optional application values retain
`BamlOptional<T>` presence tracking.

### Swift

```swift
let opts = Baml.BamlOptions(timeoutMs: 1000)
try Baml.optional_args_probe(arg0: 1)
try Baml.optional_args_probe(arg0: 1, opt1: .value(7))
try Baml.optional_args_probe(arg0: 1, baml: opts)
try Baml.optional_args_probe(arg0: 1, opt1: .value(7), baml: opts)
```

Async uses `try await Baml.optional_args_probe_async(...)`. `.unset`
omits an application argument; `nil` passes an explicit null. Options
default to `.init()`.

### Coverage and validation

The four-form matrix was compiled and exercised against generated SDKs
in Python, TypeScript Node/Chromium/Workers, Go, Rust, C++17, Java,
Kotlin, C#, and Swift. Sync and async forms were checked where exposed,
including omission versus null. C# and Swift additionally verify
zero-timeout rejection with and without optional application arguments.
Kotlin was checked as a local Java-SDK/coroutine consumer.

Recorded validation includes Node strict type checking, the rebuilt
69-test C++ function-call suite, and 100 Rust function-call tests with
one existing ignored test. Native workspace Clippy and commit formatting
checks passed. These results cover the audited invocation calling forms;
they do not claim complete validation of every broader BEP-81 language
behavior.

CI](https://github.com/BoundaryML/baml/actions/runs/37055110404) for
`c456809` (status when this description was updated: in progress). The
local results above were recorded during implementation and are not a
new full-suite run after synchronization.

### Compatibility and scope

Legacy `_ctx`/`$ctx`, Java context overloads, and C#'s standalone
generated cancellation parameter migrate to invocation options. Python's
`_types` and TypeScript's `$types` remain separate. Ruby is outside this
public-facade PR. Host instrumentation and the final Python/Node facade
organization are addressed in BoundaryML#5091.

asynchronous invocation APIs, including for C++.

* **Updates**
* Replaced the previous call-context cancellation API with invocation
options and cancel tokens. Host callbacks now access cancellation
through the active invocation.

* **Bug Fixes**
* Improved cancellation and timeout propagation through callbacks and
nested invocations, and validation of invocation options and trace
reservations.
