monk not working with node v18.8 on windows 11

Works fine with node.exe v16.16.0

e.g. the following code hangs on the count call, then aborts without any error after about 10 seconds.
import monk from 'monk'

import monk from 'monk';
const db = monk('mongodb://localhost:27017/somedb');
const count = await db.get('somecoll').count();
console.log(count);

monk is now deprecated, switch to mongoose instead

I got it to work by changing the connecting string to use 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost.
