Version 1.0

The first stable release.
This should cover any serious issues which need fixing before committing to long-term stability, i.e. significant API changes. Internal refactorings which don't affect the API would ideally be included but are not mandatory, and feature additions which can be made without backwards-incompatible changes can come later (but won't be rejected if implemented beforehand).
