Copilot in GitHub
Body
Hello GitHub Community,
I am posting this publicly because I would like to understand whether other GitHub for Startups / Copilot customers have experienced a similar situation, and whether there is a proper escalation path for this type of problem.
I am the owner of a GitHub Enterprise account that received US$10,000 in GitHub for Startups credits.
My usage pattern was initially relatively stable:
June 2026: US$898.56
July 2026: US$925.43
August 2026: US$1,755.79
September 2026: US$3,904.84 displayed monthly total
For September, the principal visible billing lines that I was able to identify totaled approximately US$3,855.81:
I am NOT claiming that all of these amounts were necessarily deducted from my GitHub for Startups credits.
That distinction is exactly what I have been asking GitHub to clarify.
The increase is significant.
My usage went from approximately US$900 per month in June and July, to US$1,755.79 in August, and then to US$3,904.84 in September.
Based on the way I work, including the approximate volume of pull requests and development operations I normally perform, this increase was significant enough that I requested a detailed technical and financial investigation.
I opened GitHub Support ticket #4819346 on October 3, 2026.
I requested an account-level reconciliation showing:
The main questions remain unanswered.
GitHub Support did respond on October 6 and explicitly stated:
“We’re experiencing a bug with Copilot getting charged to the payment method on file rather than the credits.”
That acknowledgement is important.
However, the detailed reconciliation I requested has still not been provided.
There is another serious issue regarding the resolution timeframe.
During this process, I was informed that a correction/update was expected to be reflected within approximately 24 hours.
Approximately 10 days have now passed and the expected resolution has still not been completed.
The service impact also continues.
My GitHub account currently displays:
“Usage is currently blocked by your organization. Contact your administrator to resume usage.”
Therefore, despite having been approved for US$10,000 in GitHub for Startups credits, I currently have Copilot/AI usage restricted while the billing and promotional-credit issue remains unresolved.
What concerns me most is not simply that support is taking time.
The main technical and financial questions I submitted have still not received substantive answers.
I still need GitHub to explain:
What is the official remaining balance of the original US$10,000 GitHub for Startups benefit?
How much Startup credit was actually consumed in each month?
Which products and SKUs caused each deduction?
What generated approximately US$3,595.19 in Copilot Cloud Agent usage in September?
Were all Enterprise, Copilot and Actions included allowances applied before Startup credits were consumed?
Was any usage duplicated, incorrectly metered, unexpectedly automated, or affected by a billing/migration issue?
What exactly does the “US$2,904.02 off” figure displayed in the billing interface represent?
What happened to the correction/update that was expected within approximately 24 hours?
Why is Copilot/AI usage still blocked?
What must be corrected to restore normal access without improperly charging the payment method or consuming promotional credits?
The current billing interface does not allow me to independently reconstruct the promotional-credit ledger.
That is why I am requesting GitHub's internal accounting records rather than making assumptions about the numbers.
I have preserved screenshots, billing information and the support correspondence.
I would strongly prefer to resolve this directly and professionally with GitHub.
However, after approximately 10 days with the service still affected and without receiving the detailed reconciliation requested, I am considering consulting a lawyer in Brazil to evaluate the appropriate consumer-protection measures.
That could include seeking review through PROCON and, if appropriate after legal analysis, the Juizado Especial Cível and an obligation-to-perform remedy (“obrigação de fazer”) concerning restoration of service and proper reconciliation of the credits.
This is not intended as a threat.
My objective is straightforward:
I would especially like to hear from other GitHub for Startups / Copilot users:
If GitHub staff or Community Managers can help direct this case to the appropriate team, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.
